American Samoa

American Samoa is the most southerly of all US territories, and is composed of 5 islands. While it offers some of the typical tropical beauty common to the region, American Samoa has also suffered from over-development during colonialism. Nonetheless, unspoiled beauty can still be found. Ofu Island is often featured in photographs, and contains fine coral sand ideal for long strolls on the beach. Tutuila, the largest island contains a beautiful half moon harbour formed by a huge volcano caldera. You can drive across long stretches of this island while admiring the dramatic coastlines and majestic mountains. All of the islands are volcanic in origin, meaning that you will find lush tropical forests and hilly landscapes. Stop at Amalau valley, and you just might be able to see a flying fox. On Ta’u, yet another island, visit Saua, considered the birthplace of Polynesian people, and is a sacred site and spiritual center. As always, plenty of snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities fringe these lush though humid islands.

Bring your snorkle, the water is so crystal clear, you can see many fish very vividly. You may even be able to snorkle with the dolphins...we never caught them out there:(

Breath deep and take in the crashing waves on the clifs as you see them at your feet. Look out into the horizin for as far as you can see. Drink the fresh cocconut milk, as you watch an islander make you a grass hat. But watch how much rum you drink...I repeat...watch how much rum you drink...it goes down smooth, too smooth.

Ofu, American Samoa
Lay in the hammock and listen to the waves. Lay on the little runway that is so close to the bed and breakfast. Don't worry, there are only two planes a week. Differently snorkel.
