Vanadzor, Northern Armenia, Armenia
Vanadzor is a cute little place, set away in the mountains of Armenia. The road there looks a lot like parts of Ireland. The people are nice and always willing to lend a helping hand, although the roads are rough and sometimes running water is an issue. The best food is homecooked by a native, though the restaurants are quaint in a rough sort of way. Never drain your glass though, unless you want it filled immediately!

Yerevan, Central Armenia, Armenia
Yerevan is a great place to visit. The people are very hospitible. The Congress Hotel is a great alternative to the Marriott for Western lodging, and the on-site pool area and restaurant are great. The Bellaggio is a great place to eat, and be sure to experience the great gardens and cafe spots around the opera house. Must have khorovatz (barbque, usually pork) with lavash (local handmade flatbread), sold everywhere. Food is great overall with strong Mediterranean, Persian, and Russian influences.

Aparan, Central Armenia, Armenia
It is roumered that Aparantsi are the dummies among all Armenians. The best jokes about themselves can be heard from .... themselves. People full of joy and humour!

Yerevan has a hip cafe culture. You can't go a block without hitting two or three cafes. It's great to pass away the time sitting in a cafe sipping brandy and watching people walking along with their families.

Armenia Religion

Armenian Apostolic 95%, other Christian 4%, Yezidi 1%.

The Armenian Apostolic Church dated back to the time when Christianity was established as the state religion in 301 AD.  From then on, it became the defender of Armenian identify, cultural and nationalism, which survived despite nearly 1,600 years of foreign, Islamic or atheist rule until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Armenia Language

The official language is Armenian.  Other languages spoken are Yezidi and Russian.

Kurdish is sometimes used in broadcasting as over 50,000 Kurds live in the country.

Yerevan, Central Armenia, Armenia

Geghard, Central Armenia, Armenia
When visiting Geghard Monastery, definitely sing a song in the big rock-hewn gavit (if you are allowed to by the clergy) - it has an incredible sound !

Armenia Sports
Dilijan, Northern Armenia, Armenia
Dilijan is a beautiful town, especially in the summer. In Lorri Marz, it's surrounded by trees and an ideal place to go hiking. If you go, look around to see if a Peace Corps Volunteer lives there who can show you around.

Arzni, Central Armenia, Armenia
Health SPAs dating back to 1950s can be found in Arzni - all still operational. The mineral water of Arzni is known for its positive effect on patients with heart problems. If you like rock climbing or hiking, the canyon is excellent for that.

Lusarrat, Central Armenia, Armenia
If you visit Khor Virap Monastery, you take it in the early morning, 'cause we arrived at 1 p.m. and we couldn't see anything about the Ararat, the sun was rising to our eyes.

Vayk', Southern Armenia, Armenia
Spring water (didn't get any intestinal problems from drinking it either!) shared with tons of Iranians on a tour bus - it sucks when the only country with an open border to yours is Iran! Yikes!!!
