The Armenian Apostolic Church dated back to the time when Christianity was established as the state religion in 301 AD. From then on, it became the defender of Armenian identify, cultural and nationalism, which survived despite nearly 1,600 years of foreign, Islamic or atheist rule until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
