If you want to get away from the city and chill out for a bit there's a great little hostel in Collaroy right on the beach called the Sydney Beach house. Its quite cheap and for a hostel very clean and comfortable.. Across the road there's a few shops and the Surf rock - a small bar where I had a few legendary nights lets say.  And, if you're into your surfing or mountain biking its ideal!
