Stanthorpe Travel Guide

Stanthorpe is a remarkably attractive town set in the middle of a rich, mixed farming area where rural activities range from vineyards, wineries and orchards to sheep and cattle grazing. Located on the New England Highway 223 km from Brisbane via Warwick, 56 km north of Tenterfield and 811 m above sea level, Stanthorpe is unusually cool for Queensland. In winter the night time temperatures in the town often fall below zero - the average minimum temperature for July is 0.3°C. In fact the town once recorded -14.6°C - the coldest temperature ever recorded in the Sunshine state. The Stanthorpe and District Historical Society Museum is a typical, well developed rural museum which includes a shearer's hut (1842), the North Marylands School Residence (1891), the Stanthorpe Shire Council Chambers, a small gaol, some interesting railway artefacts (commemorating the Amiens branch line for the soldier settlement area), and a vast collection of memorabilia from the area. All of the buildings have been beautifully preserved. The setting, next to the Top of the Town Caravan Park at the top of Main Street, is delightful. Opening times for the museum are restricted to 2.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m. on Sundays and Public Holidays. It can be opened at other times. There are a list of telephone numbers of liaison officers outside the building.

LE lieux par excellence pour faire du fruitpicking. C'est le royaume de la pomme... Je conseillerais le camping Happy Apple où on est accueilli par la chaleureuse Automn qui compte bien faire de son camping un petit coin de verdure. L'ambiance y est super, tous la goon à la main le soir venu. Internet est à disposition, ce qui n'est pas négligeable.

Chilly at night. Footy club there has a shed as a bar and I got a corker of black eye playing footy out there. But that's not important...we kicked their arse...now that's what's important!!!
