Travel Tips from people who've been to Fitzroy Crossing
If you made it to Fitzroy Crossing then you are officially in the middle of nowhere. Plenty of bush about and a few pubs... a real Australian outback town.
In the wet season the dry river beds (billabongs) fill up and often overflow... making them impassable. That is when you wait it out and make sure you have plenty of provisions because if you try to cross you might get swept away with the current. We travelled in four wheel drives and an interesting fact is that when the landrover's wheels no longer touch the road then they act kind of like a paddle boat to get you across... IF the current isn't too strong.
If you get stuck for weeks then you might make some enquiries at the local station and see if they can put you up out of the goodness of their hearts. We stayed in the head jackaroo's humpy... a hut made of sticks and chicken wire (what bushies can do with chicken wire is almost unlimited) and the cement floor crawled with hundreds of insects throughout the night. Hundreds of sulphur crested cockatoos wake you up about 5am with a massive amount of screeching. Good tip? (0) On the road to Geike Gorge, in a guidebook called "free camping in WA" or something like that, I found a campsite along the river, completely isolated, unbelievable place, no aminities but who cares when you have the river, the birds, the sand bank, the trees...?? It's an abandonned dirt road on the rght on the road to the Gorges, I'd say 50ks or so before the parking space to visit Geike gorges. Good tip? (0) it doesnt get much hotter in WA than this... dont even walk for 5 minutes without a litre of water and a hat... and be prepared for the flies! i stayed on the local campsite which has an outdoor kitchen with a resident frog (or 4)... by the time your rice is boiled, there will be a billion cockroaches boiled as well! so forget that and go to the campsite pub for a steak and some beer...
