Travel Tips from people who've been to Port Hedland
I was a very long time ago that I lived in Port Hedland... I went to school there (South Hedland too). We used to catch really big crabs along the estuary just by throwing a rope with a few knots down to the holes where the crabs were... they latched on with their pinscers and we carefully pulled them up the bank... they tasted great! The tide comes in really quickly, so if you picnic on the sandbanks there what starts as a small stream will be a torrent in a matter of minutes... nearly drowned that way when I was 5 or 6 and couldn't swim... I learned to swim very quickly that day. The beaches are beautiful, clean and relatively secluded. This is still the middle of nowhere but the locals are friendly... go to any pub to meet them. Bring your bathers. This is a mining town packed with lonely single guys earning great money... the guys usually go and party in Perth on their weeks off... this might interest the ladies. Food is usually served in giant portions in this area of the world for the hard working guys.

The Aboriginal Art at Two Mile Ridge has been engraved into a limestone ridge. The engravings depict whales, turtles, fish and bird tracks. Climb the 26 metre Town Observation Tower. Located behind the Visitor Centre this former Navigational Tower offers superb views of the coastline. Between June and October, the waters off port Hedland are inhabited by Humpback Whales from July to October as they migrate to the warmer waters to breed. Their mating rituals involving breaching and tail slapping make the whales an exciting attraction to observe. This is absolutely awe inspiring......
