Salzburg is one of Austria's most famous cities for many reasons. The fourth biggest city of Austria is the birthplace of Mozart. It is possible to visit his birthplace and residence, which has been converted into a museum. Salzburg's Altstadt (Old Town) is equally famous in its own right for its well-preserved baroque style architecture for which has been given UNESCO World Heritage designation as a result. Here too is where the American movie, The Sound of Music, was filmed, and various tours of the filming locations are offered by local companies. Other famous landmarks include Mirabelle Palace and Hellbrunn Palace.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Salzburg
A couple of things you should do if you have a little more time in Salzburg;
Go to the Museum der Moderne on the Monchsberg.
Go to the AugustinerBrau for really good Austrian food, good beer and cheap prices in a great environment.
Go to the Steinterrassencafe in the Hotel Stein, just next to the main bridge- you get a great view over the centre.
Sit in Mirabell Gardens for a bit, you'll see all the locals sunning themselves.
Have Sacher Torte, the Hotel Sacher cafe has the best but it's quite expensive.
Mozart Kugeln obviously- but buy the ones from the Konditorei Furst (the silver ones) because they're the originals.
Mozart's Geburthaus is quite boring, his Wohnhaus is quite cool.
In summer, go to the Eisgrotte on Getreidegasse for amazing ice cream.
Cafe Tomaselli isn't really that expensive; if you go have the apfelstrudel. It's immense.
If you have half a day to spare go up to the Untersberg (a mountain), on a sunny day the view is amazing. Failing that the view from the Hohensalzburg Fortress good.
Get a Salzburg Card- you can get in pretty much any touristy place free plus you don't have to pay for buses. Good tip? (+1) A Must Do In Salzburg Stiftskeller St. Peter The food and the atmosphere here aren't to be missed. It is touted as the oldest restaurant in Europe. Founded in the 9th century by monks the history is apparent. The traditional Austrian fare is great and hearty. Come hungry. Favorite Dish: My favorite thing was the unique wine service at your table pictured. Check it out. It’s worth the experience. Prices: US$21-30 Phone: 0662/848481 Address: St. Peter Bezirk 4, Salzburg, Austria Directions: Located in St. Peter's Cemetary. Good tip? (0) The Sound Of Music Tour The Sound Of Music Tour, I would say, is only for big SOM fans. And, okay, I'll admit, I'm a fan. It's cheesy and silly but it can be fun with the right group. Unfortunately our group was filled with people who had been dragged along by other fans. The bus takes you to the Von Trapp estate. You are filled with little needless factoids about the movie and all the while the soundtrack plays in the background. The tour also takes you to the gazebo and shows you a bit of the countryside where portions of the movie were filmed. Good tip? (0)
