Graz is the capital of Styria and is Austria's second largest city with a population of nearly 300,000.  It was the European City of Culture in 2003.

The leading attraction is the Schlossberg, which is the castle hill at the center of the city that looms over the old town at an elevation of nearly 500 meters.  The hill contains the ruins of the old castle (partially destroyed in 1809), but is now a public park with excellent views.  The hill also has tunnels that you can explore, and the clock tower on top is a key symbol of Graz.

Graz is also known as a student city, and thus has a very active nightlife.

Like several other Austrian cities, Graz has an extremely well preserved Aldstadt (Old Town) which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Graz

A beautifull city surrounded by hills on the south of Austria. There is a mixture of old buildings combined with a new and modern architecture which match perfectly together. It's a city of artists all kind, city of young people and full of musicians all sorts. When tired of walking down beautifull colourfull streets full of people who are shopping, enjoying a good company, walking and drinking coffee, you can find your getaway in the surrounding hills and just enjoy peacefull nature which will fill in your batteries and bring peace to your mind..
