This beautiful small town in the Salzkammergut sits nestled on a lake shore surrounded by mountains.   It is home to the world's first salt mine.

Hallstatt itself is pretty small (under 1,000 inhabitants), but is quite popular among tourists and is located in a UNESCO World Heritage region for Cultural Landscape.  In additional to the salt mines, one can visit the Dachstein Ice Caves and the Hallstatter See (Lake) which is very picturesque.

it is hard to find unless youre with some one that has been there before. it is in the mountains and you get off the train into the woods and walk to a dock and ride a boat over to the city. go to the salt mines and go through them. there is a church at the top of a mountain there close to the dock where they bury the dead standing up for a grand total of ten years because the space is that limited and then they move the remains into a crypt under the church. it is a nice place to go and relax for a couple of days.
Good tip?
