Generally, the east and centre of the country have a subtropical climate and are dry, whereas the southeast region is more humid. The Caspian coast has a temperate weather.
The country’s climate is influenced by the mountainous terrain. The Major Caucasus runs from the northwest to the southeast; as a result it forms a barrier to the cold air mass from the Artic and Siberia, providing a subtropical climate on the plains and lowlands on the other side of the mountain. Similarly, the other mountains in the country also help to temper the influence of the air masses from the tropics.
There is little rainfall for most parts of the country, averaging no more than 25 cm annually. The regions with higher precipitation are in the southeast end of the country with about 100 cm a year, and in the mountains.
