Baker Island is situated near Howland Island, and features a similar type of landmass. Rising steeply from the shore, Baker is currently uninhabited and serves primarily as a wildlife refuge and nesting ground for various bird species. The terrain is very flat, and is formed from a thick deposit of guano that was heavily mined. There are no natural resources, fresh water, or trees, though there is a day beacon to help ships navigate the reefs skirt the island. As with Howland, Baker was briefly settled by 4 colonists just prior to WWII, and a cemetery and a few structures remain as a reminder. At one point, the island was also a frequent stopover point for whalers.
