An uninhabited circular atoll about 10 km in diameter formed by a submerged volcano, Bassas da India is located north of Europa island about halfway between Madagascar and Mozambique in the Indian Ocean. This atoll rises steeply from a seabed of about 3000m, making the surrounding area great for wall dives. Here, you will see schools of kingfish, rainbow runners, the solitary yellow-fin tuna, silvertip or hammerhead shark. There is no vegetation on the atoll as it is completely submerged during low tide. At high tide, the island atoll reaches an elevation of approximately 1 metre. The surrounding reefs were considered a maritime hazard, and numerous shipwrecks can be found nearby. Bassas da India can be reached by private charter, and can be considered a memorable experience in a pristine marine environment.
