Belgium

Multilingual Belgium packs a large amount of quality sights into a relatively compact area. Numerous outstanding museums complement the well-preserved historic town centers. Belgian food is also well admired with the moules frites (mussels with fries) and beer being on top of many lists.

The medieval town of Bruges is one of Europe’s best preserved and takes you back in time to the Middle Ages. Admire the buildings in the old town and treat yourself to the delectable chocolates, incredible variations of french-fries, waffles and the delicious white beer, Blanche de Bruges . Take a boat ride through the canals and visit the excellent museums with its troves of Flemish works from Van Eyck, Memling, Bosch, and others.

Brussels is the seat of several levels of Belgian government, home of the Belgian Royal Family, and headquarters of NATO, the Hague. The Grand-Place is a magnificent square that becomes especially impressive at night or during one of the markets. Brussels has several impressive museums including the Musees Royaux Des Beaux-Arts De Belgique.

Antwerp is known worldwide as a diamond-trading center, but visitors will most immediately notice its towering cathedral, which reaches over 400 feet high and dominates the skyline. The Royal Museum of Fine Art is a great place for art lovers.

Ghent’s old town makes for an enticing and picturesque walk. Stroll along the Quay and admire the facades of the medieval houses lining the bank.. St-Baafskathedraal holds Van Eyck’s Adoration of the Mystic Lamb Altarpiece, a masterpiece from the 1400s.

There are numerous other buildings of high attractiveness. The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Tournai is one of the most impressive in Belgium with its five towers, while the Tower of St-Romboutskathedraal in Mechelen was once called the “Eighth Wonder of the World”.

Antwerpen, Antwerpen Region, Belgium
In addition to being the diamond capitol of the world, Antwerp has some wonderful museums.  The Museum of Photography and Rubenshuis are just two of the must sees.  Not to mention, Antwerp's location makes it an ideal jumping off point for Amsterdam, Gent, and Brugges.  Once in Antwerp, it you look for the charm, you'll find it.
Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
Brussels is a great city to walk around in. Try out one of the walking tours, and don't forget to check out a chocolate store. Delicious! I would also recommend a crepe filled with bananas, creme, and fudge. :)

I live in Ghent since november 2006 and I still feel like a tourist here. I actually quiet like it; I discover new places each day. The diner I discovered 2 weeks ago, is a little but popular diner. The dishes aren't expensive but good and tasty; many students go there. And for all smokers; the don't serve fries there so you can still smoke inside the diner! :) The diner is called 'Bleuzette' and you can find it at 'Sint-Kwintensberg' in the city centre of Ghent.

If you're back packing your way around Europe, I'd definitely suggest trying one of Brugge's many youth hostels. The Passage is a pretty nice little hostel with a BB feel to it. The Bauhaus is a quirky little place that's good to lay your head for a while and the nightlife definitely makes an impression. Another good place to drop your packs for a while with a nice lively nightlife is the Snuffle. They're all pretty cheap and you definitely won't be disappointed with the city.
Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
the small lanes of restaurants are awesome, as are the chocolate shops. definitely worth a visit

Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the administrative centre of the European Union. This has earned the city the title of the Capital of Europe. Brussels has been given its character by the coexistence of French and Flemish culture, and it is nowadays home to nationalities around the world, adding a cosmopolitan flavour to its atmosphere. The vibrant atmosphere of Brussels is further enhanced by picturesque medieval streets, lively squares, beautiful boulevards, impressive monuments, spacious parks, cosy cafés, interesting restaurants and an active cultural life.

Tip for Antwerp, Belgium AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS
Antwerpen, Antwerpen Region, Belgium
Antwerpen is a little misunderstood...you need to scratch the surface a little. Definitely visit Vlaamsekaai, the surrounding bars, cafes, and shops down the side streets are definitely little gems in an otherwise dirty and always under construction city.
Brugge, Brabant Wallon Region, Belgium
Fairy-land, jewel-box, make-believe--all could easily be descriptions of Brugge. This exquisitely preserved Belgian town is a step back in time, and a day engaged in the rather touristy pursuit of skimming along its canals is a day well-spent. It's all gabled houses and narrow lanes and preening swans; yes, there are attendant hordes of tourists, but if you can make it there in the off-season or if you are able to stay overnight, you'll be able to see it without the tour bus crowds. Either way, though, it's really difficult to not fall under its spell.

Clairefontaine, Luxembourg Region, Belgium
This small picturesque place lies a couple of kilometers outside of Arlen (capital of the Belgian province Luxemburg). En route for the Luxemburgian village of Eischen, you pass by a little chapel, dating back to the 19th century. It is worth pulling over the car to visit this little chapel, because that's only a small part of what you get to see. Next to the chapel is a staircase, leading down to an archaeological excavation of a medieval monastery. The monastery was founded in about the 13th century by Countess Ermesinde, and was burned down during the French Revolution in the 18th Century. There are, hower, indications for earlier occupation of this place, such as graves dating to the 10th century AD. Even than, it probably had a religious meaning, and the monastery may be a replacement of an even older structure. When you get down to the archaeological site, you will see there's a small fountain. This fountain is still delivering water from the same source as more than 700 years ago. It is said that Saint Bernard visited this site, hence the source is said to be holy.
Brugge, Brabant Wallon Region, Belgium

The Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival comes to Brugge each winter. It is well worth a visit but to avoid the crowds try going towards the end of the festival. We went on the last day it was open in mid January and it was busy but not as bad as it had been when it first opened in late November. www.brugesinfo.com holds a competition each year to win free tickets but otherwise it is around EUR11 for an adult ticket.
Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
Met some great people in the youth hostel there. Sampled the whacky Belgian beer...flavours include banana, apple, cherry and blackberry. Stick to the lagers though...trust me, your stomach doesn't want to throw it back up as easily.
Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
Ohhh the waffles, creamy chocolate, a milkshake made from real thick vanilla bean ice-cream!! Alley ways filled with an amazing array of classy little restaurants –creative seafood displays - waiters with character persuading the passer-byers to step into Their restaurant bagging each other in the process for a laugh :) I did go to Hotel Aux Arcades - treated like a queen. Have a look at the Dexia building light displays. Visit the Atomium. Royal Palace gardens can’t be missed in bloom.

don't go with the creepy tourist information guy to the music festival in ghent. (we didn't go- too suspect- don't want to end up 6 feet beneath his backyard.) but if he invites you also it confirms my suspicions. there is a good campsite there, in an unlikely place. they can book it for you at tourist information.

Great multinational city - not as ugly as some people think - for me rather interesting.

Sint-Amands, Antwerpen Region, Belgium
Modest town on the river Schelde, known for his churchtower which is the highest in the region and is located at the waterfront. Here you can also find the grave of the flemish writer Emile Verhaeren, who was born in Sint-Amands. The 'churchsquare' is a nice spot to 'do a little terrace' as they say in Flanders, which means as much as to enjoy a beer on a nice sunny location in open air. The region is also knwon as the location where the flemish television series 'Stille Waters' (Silent Waters) was filmed.
Driegoten, Oost-Vlaanderen Region, Belgium
A small suburb of the city Hamme, on the river Schelde. Is best known for its bars and tavernes on the waterfront, which act as a nice stop while cycling along the bords of the river. There's also a pretty nice classy restaurant located here 'De Plezanten Hof', enjoy the excellent meal, but don't faint when you get the bill ;)
Tongeren, Limburg Region, Belgium
Vrij saaie stad, en vanaf 14uur vind ge der dus niks meer om te ete :p

Durbuy, Luxembourg Region, Belgium
When in Durbuy, the best way to sleep is out in a tent under the stars (just keep your fingers crossed that you don't experience the typical Belgian weather). For a daytime activity: A leisurely day of kayaking is a fantastic way to take in the incredible scenery in the Ardennes.
Gent, Oost-Vlaanderen Region, Belgium

Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
If staying in Brussels, you should really go to "Le Petit Palais", rue du Baudet, the best Belgian food in Brussels !
Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
Don't forget to check out Manneken Pis (the little peeing guy) he is close to the central market square but very small indeed and one may not see him. Just look where most of the tourists stop to take a picture. This little guy has many different costumes (even an Elvis costume) and sometimes instead of water also pees another liquid.
Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
Every city has it's charms, and the charms of Brussels are readily available for you to see in a matter of just one or two days if you consider to travel here.

Beer aside, Belgian chocolate is second to none (apologies to the Swiss), so visit the Museum of Cocoa Chocolate and learn about the history of chocolate making. You also get to try some samples ... not just a chocoholics delight.

Make sure to check out 'daily life' in Antwerp. Go lunch somewhere in a crowded place(e.g. 'LaPlace' in Stadsfeestaal, Meir Street; or 'Wappertien' on Wapper Plaza). You'll have dinner somewhere in the hip South District, with restaurants from all over the world (go to Leopold de Waelplaats or Vlaamse Kaai), and end the evening in a pub where almost everyone from Antwerp gathers together to close the day (good places are De 'Muz'e at Melkmarkt or 'Appelmans' at Papenstraatje) If You need a quick bite and it's your first time in Belgium, check out a fries house ("frituur" in Dutch), to try the real Belgian fries in a very popular atmosphere.
Bruges, West-Vlaanderen Region, Belgium
Cute town, nice chocolate. Mmm. The Christmas market in the main square is great too.
Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
You have to attend at least one weekend music fest in Belgium! It is to die for! Just take lots of water and don't expect anything to be hygenic... No showers available if your camping out and the lavotories are outside. The music is fabulous though and the vibe is incredible.
Liege, Liege Region, Belgium
Liège is a french speaking city, one of the most important ones from Belgium. There is a small chance you'll find someone that will speak english or dutch, but don't count on that. My advise would be to bring your french dictionary when visiting. Some people think Liège is horrible, some people think it's OK. I would say it's OK, depends on what you are looking for. Compared to other european villages, it might look not "as clean", but still is not a big deal. If you get to wrong streets you might get to see some drug addicts, but that's the worse you can see here. On the other hand you have nice stuff to see, you can walk next to the river, you can have an amazing view of the city from "La Citadelle", just by taking some long stairs (or a bus if you want). Downtown, also known as "Le carré" (which means the square) has all major stores if you are the shopping kind of person, and in the night becomes the point of gathering for party! About the food, well, there are two kinds of waffles (Gauffres in french) in the world, Brussel's ones and Liege's ones. The one's from Liège are thicker, the ones from Brussels have more air insde, it's a matter of taste. So, if you come to Liège, you can't leave without eating the famous "Gauffres de Liège". There are also lots of cafés, so you can sit and relax in anyone of them you can find for instance in "Place du marché" in downtown. You can also find some cafés near the Cathedral, also in downtown. Both sites with a cool ambience. If you are looking for restaurants, you can try downtown, "la cuisine" is variated or you can cross the pont that divides the city, get to the other side called "outremeuse" and there you can also find some nice places to eat. Talking about "outremeuse", the other side of the river, the main event there would be "le 15 août". The 15th august they celebrate the Virgin Mary. It's a big event, lot's of people come to this, there is of course a mess and a procession, but later there is music, parades, dancing, food and drinking, A LOT of drinking. It's really fun, the only downside (if it can be considered as such) is that this event is really famous, there is lot of people coming and the space can be small sometimes. Sure thing is that if you are around sometime near this date, this is something you can't miss. Another event that's important in Liège, is "le marché de La Batte". It's a big, HUGE, street market, that's made every sunday of the year the long of the river, near downtown. It's amazing, you can find almost anything you might need (even don't need) there. People selling there everything, and people from all countries, personally I've seen Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Turkish, Mexican, (and of course Belgian), people among others, selling specialities from their own country. Also something not to miss if you come to visit. About public transportation, it's OK, there are buses that can get you almost everywhere, one ride is 1.30€, and a ticket for 8 rides costs 6.30€. Buses 1 and 4 do a urban loop, so with these buses if you get lost at least you're sure you won't end up somewhere else. About trains, there are three main stations, Liège Guillemins (the main station), then one train stop called "Liège Jonfosse" and then the last station "Liège Palais". The station Liège Guillemins is the one that has TGV (high speed) trains and is the biggest one of the city, is located 30 mins walking from downtown. The station Liège Jonfosse is located 10 mins walking from downtown (Le Carré). And Liège Palais is located 5 mins walking from the main place in the city (also the main bus station), the "Place St. Lambert". And my last input about this village, if you wonder how people is?... well, people in Liège complaint all the time about everything, but when you talk to them they are reaaaaally nice people, and if you need help, or directions or whatever, don't be afraid to ask as they will make an effort to understand you and help you, for sure.
Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
This statue can be thought of as the emblem of Brussels, but when you see it I think the reaction is likely to be “is that it?”, or “what is all the fuss about?” This is no Eiffel Tower or Statue of Liberty – it’s simply a small water fountain on a street corner, albeit a somewhat suggestive one! Nevertheless, I don’t suppose anyone can come to Brussels and not visit the Mannekin. I hadn’t realised that the Manneken Pis is very often dressed. He has a wardrobe of more than 600 costumes, which are all preserved in the King's House, or City Museum at the Grand-Place. I’d have liked to see him in one of these, but he was naked when we visited. I read several legends about the Manneken. According to one of them a little boy watered against the door of a witch who lived where the fountain now stands, and the witch was so angry that she turned the boy into a statue. Another tells how a man lost his little son. He found the child after two days, peeing near the place where now the statue stands. As a token of gratitude the father had the fountain with a statue of a peeing boy constructed

Come in winter or stay overnight! During the cold season and any regular late evening, the city empties out and it's much more pleasant to stroll around and take in the sights and feel like you've just been teleported into the middle ages. Tourist facilities run year-round so no obstacle there and although nightlife may be fairly subdued, you'll thank yourself for it later!

First thing I do when I get to Brussels is to eat a Waffel (sometimes two) they are more than great in taste and calories. Ofcourse an expresso and the best Belgian Chokolade in the world is on the menu during the day and seafood dinner in Rue Des Bouchers. The favorite sights that I go back to again and again are: Grand-Place, Manneken Pis, Cathedral of Saints Michelvet Gudule, Grand Sablone and Royal Palace. Ofcourse you should taste on of the 1000 of different beers that the belgians produce, there will be one for your taste....ABSOLUTELY GREAT CITY and People in Belgien.

Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
Be sure to visit the Atomium and try some local beers (as good as many of the brews you'll find in Germany). Also, if staying for some time, consider a (short) train trip to Paris for the day...it's an easier way to see Paris than actually staying in Paris (in my opinion).
Binche, Hainaut Region, Belgium
Come to Binche when they have their unique and crazy Mardi Gras festival! It involves the local men dressing in elaborate costumes that involve some kind of a feathery headgear. They than walk around the streets throwing (blood) oranges at onlookers. The idea is that you stand in the crowd and catch the oranges...supposed to bring good luck to whoever catches them!! When I went I got the train from Brussels, visiting for one day. It was easy enough but in Binche not many people speak English, and I cannot speak the local language, so I ended up getting lost when it was time to head back to the train station to get back to Brussels. So it would be a good idea to have some sort of a local street map of Binche with at least the main streets and the train station marked on.
