Travel Tips from people who've been to Mechelen
A beautiful and quiet flemish city with the same general feel as Gent or Brugge, but much smaller and with a fraction of the tourists. Worth a stop and a stroll if you're in the vicinity. Seven churches (not bad for such a small city). Mechelen looked pleasant enough to even try living there (certainly a lot more pleasant than Brussels, which I couldn't quite learn to like). If you're visiting Belgium, you might consider staying here and traveling around, if you're not after nightlife. Good tip? (0) The site of http://www.inenuitmechelen.be/en/ is a good way to prepare your travels.
7 highlights are: Saint Rumbold’s Cathedral - De Wit Royal Manufactory - “Het Anker” Brewery - The Small and Large Beguinage - taking a 'church tour' (there are 7 (!) in the city) - Schepenhuis Museum - Lamot and Fish Market Good tip? (0) Well if you need to pick a day/week to come to Mechelen then come somewhere in August. Then there is a free big festival called Moonrock (maanrrock in dutch). And every thursday also a small mini festival in the local park. If you want a nice and cosy hotel then go for hotel "Ve" at the vismarkt. http://www.hotelve.com/ . For the budget traveller there is also an youth hostel. Good tip? (0)
