Aalst is located along the River Dender, between Brussels and Gent.  It  is perhaps best known for its Carnival parade, which starts on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday.  It lasts for three days, peaking on Shrove Tuesday for the day of the Voil Jeannetten where men dress up as women.
