Belize City Travel Guide

Dont Stay in Belize City. Its not pretty and very crowded. When you get to Belize go imediatly to The mountains or to the cayes. San Ignacio is the stopping point if you go to the mountains. I like to take a local bus from the Novalo bus terminal for only 5 dollars to San Ignacio, then get a cab to Bullet tree falls. Cohune Palms is a great place on the river, with thatched roofs and an outside kitchen. They have private tour guides, and a cook that will make all your meals. Places to see why there. Barton creek you can cross an omish settlement and then take a canou into deep caves.  Caracol is a great ruin that rivals Tikal in Guatemala but no people there. And always rend a canoe and visit the butterfly farm then take canoe on macaw river back to San Ignacio. Very pretty. If water is more you thing, and you like it more layed back. I recomend caye corker. Go to the marina and take a boat for about 10 dollars. CayeCaulker is what the locals call it. Its popular with european backpackers. Very relaxing.  

Belize has only 4 major highways leading out from Belize City. Belize, the entire country mind you, has only four stop lights. The fifth one was blown down by a hurricane! I am very serious. The roads are very small, so the larger vehicle gets the right of way. My wife and I traveled the Western Highway. The locals were very nice, but the street vendors can be very annoying. Make sure you check out the Wet Lizard in the Tourist village, if you went there on a cruise ship. I also endorse the Belikin beer which they brew just outside of Belize city.
