About Belize Planning a Trip to Belize
San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize For eastern Belize, this is a great place to get back and recharge. There are all the facilities you may need from laundry and internet to french bakeries that serve pizza (I know, I didn't expect it either). You can get to an ATM here, but take your time. The booths air conditioned. There's a neat little outdoor market, but it stinks of fish so get there early in the day. Good tip? (0) Ambergris Cay, Belize City, Belize this beautiful caribean island boasts it's beautiful beaches. if you've ever been disappointed overrated travel tips, you don't have to worry. Its beaches are truly emerald coloured!
there are water taxis(speed boat) to ambergis cays from belize city ever hour. takes 2 hours to get to San pedro. think I payed $20 US. for a return tick.
If you are Korean(like me), get the visa before you leave or if you can't, take two passport sized photos so you can get the visa at the passport control. it could take a while if you are unlucky(in my case, i missed my bus to belize city from guatemalan border and had to get the local bus that stops every 30 seconds!!)
everything in San pedro is very expensive. so it'll help a lot if you buy basic necessities in the city.
I didn't find it very dangerous but it could be pretty dodgy so look out. Good tip? (0) Belize City, Belize City, Belize one of the most dangerous places I've ever been. Plus, as a swiss you need a visa to enter into Belize. Tip: bring 50 US Dollars, a passport photo and a bit of time at the boarder. They give you a month visa and let you pass the boarder. Stay kind, calm and do not try to argue with the customs. Good tip? (0) Ambergris Cay, Belize City, Belize "The Shack". As far as I know this place has no name. Tiffany and I were looking for a local place to try out the local food. We asked a couple of people and finally got what we were looking for. From the main part of town, head south towards the airport, hang a right to pass the north end of the airport, go one block and hang a left. There is literally a shack on your right hand side that had 3 generations of women cooking the best belizean food! We asked what they had -- did understand a whole lot, so we said give us one of everything and 2 fantas. The bill came to $15 US. Good tip? (0) Belize Belize can, in a way, rather different experience for some compared to the other Central American countries.... in matters related to visas for instance... while the others are generally moving towards easing the process (e.g, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador now have a common CA-4 treaty that allows one to move freely within these countries and doesn't require visas from many nationalities) ... Belize can get pretty weird in its differential scale of visas for different countries... some don't need visas, some countries get it free, some get it easy, some dont, some pay 20 USD as visa fees, some 50 USD, some 100 USD, some 200 USD, and if you are Chinese.... hold your breath... you pay 2000 USD as visa fees... cant think of any other country with this legacy... border visas are generally a tough take for those who need it beforehand... so know your visa rules before you plan for Belize... Good tip? (0) Dangriga, Stann Creek, Belize What an awesome town! Be sure to take a trip south to Hopkins to see the Swinging Armadillo Hammock lounge - the best hammock hang-up anywhere. It's a short trip out to the cayes from here, and the snorkeling is great. But be forewarned - a lot of people in Belize, especially in smaller towns, are not morning people. Many don't even get up before noon, so finding breakfast can be hard. Pack some food! Good tip? (+1) Dangriga, Stann Creek, Belize 1. Tobacco Caye 2. Southwater Caye 3. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary And much more.... Good tip? (+1) Ladyville, Belize City, Belize Belize! I lived here for like 1 1/2 years for medical school. We lived in Los Lagos. Ladyville is on the out-skirts of Belize City. Its an okay kind of place. I would check out the Baboon Sanctuary, The Belize Zoo, Old Belize, and go Cave Tubing. All you gotta do is ask any local, they will let you know how and where to go. People are very friendly there. You can exchange your U.S. dollars easily for Belizian dollars with anyone. Much better exchange rate than at banks and stores! Make sure you check out those Mayan Ruins if you can. They are beautiful. Plus, if you get a chance, take a propeller plane from the airport, or go to downtown Belize City and take a motor boat to Caye Caulker and San Pedro (islands of the coast of Belize), trust me, you won't be sorry you went. Beautiful islands full of snorkeling, water skiing, diving, adventure sports, and much more. Don't forget to get your hair braided! Also, make sure not to miss an opportunity to go clubbing at the Princess's club in Belize City. Plus, make sure you try the national favorite "rice beans chicken!!!!!!!!!!!" Good tip?
