Built on the Caribbean shoreline and straddling North Stann Creek (or Gumagarugu River), Dangriga’s primary boast is its status as the Garinagu people’s original port of entry into Belize—and their modern day ethnic center as well.

Aside from Dangriga’s ideal location for accessing some pretty good beaches, the surrounding mountains, off the beaten path Cayes and among the best nature reserves in Belize, its chief attraction may just be its total lack of pretense.

Consequently, this area is still relatively undeveloped for tourism, which is either a shortcoming or an attraction, depending on what kind of traveler you are.

If poking around the casually bustling vibe of Dangriga (which, by the way, means something like “sweet, still waters” in Garifuna) sounds intriguing, you’d do well to stay a couple nights as you pass between surf and turf. And if it’s culture you’re looking for, just listen for the drumming.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Dangriga
What an awesome town! Be sure to take a trip south to Hopkins to see the Swinging Armadillo Hammock lounge  - the best hammock hang-up anywhere. It's a short trip out to the cayes from here, and the snorkeling is great. But be forewarned - a lot of people in Belize, especially in smaller towns, are not morning people. Many don't even get up before noon, so finding breakfast can be hard. Pack some food!

Disgusting.  Absolutely disgusting.  Chinese food, fried chicken, and top ramen?  No, thank you.
