Coroico Travel Guide

After cycling down the death road from La Paz, staying in the Esmarelda Hostel is the best way to relax and give your thanks to 'whom it may concern' for surviving the famous mountain road. The hostel is placed at the top of a hill with fantastic views across the valley to the road you have just hurtled down on your bike. The swimming pool, sauna, tv room, pool table and buffet restaurant make spending a few days in coroico an inevitability. If you still have the travelling spirit after so much luxury, jump on the 20 hour bus to Rurrenabaque and the Bolivian Pampas. The old buses have a tough time along the road (our wheel fell off three times), and sleeping is almost impossible, but once there, you will realise why you came. Take the plane back to La Paz, if you can afford it. The prospect of another dance with death back UP the 'Death Road' just isnt worth thinking about!

To get to Coroico from La Paz you there are minivans that go through Yungas. It is definitely the narrower and most dangerous road I ever traveled on. There are agencies that offer bikes to go down the Yungas and is a lot of adrenaline in it. :)
In Coroico we stayed at hotel Esmeralda, 30 $ for an apartment.  You can take a tour of the coca plantations and eat a nice fondue at a small family restaurant La Casa. Also the fresh coffee is delicious.

If you like good doze of adrenaline and bike is not your enemy - downhill to Coroico is a must! With good weather it's a big WHOW.

TIP! If you are a big man (XXL), as I am, take with you your own waterproof outfit (pants and jacket) and be prepare to take a load of mud on it. Companies which organizing downhills providing this kind of outfit but bolivian size XXL is more L then X. :)
