Brazil

Natural beauty, a bustling lifestyle, the festive atmosphere of Carnaval, the mystic jungles of the Amazon and so much more make Brazil a popular destination. Rio de Janeiro, one of Brazil’s most famous cities, features the instantly recognizable Guanabara Bay as well as the familiar Corcovado and Christ the Redeemer, a 40m statue that overlooks the entire city. And with sun down, the day is only beginning. Nightlife is a dazzle of activity. Celebrate, dance, and let loose till dawn. Further north, Natal is well known for its gigantic sand dunes, endless sunshine and beautiful tropical beaches. At Ilha Grande Bay, you have fantastic snorkeling and diving experiences, and that is only scratching the surface of the coast. Inland, Manaus, is the hub of the Amazon region. Here, is the birthplace of the mighty Amazon, where you can see the famous Meeting of Waters between the rivers Negro and Solimões that, due to different densities, don’t mix for more than 6 miles. Within the jungle, come face to face with Brazil’s legendary diverse wildlife. From Toucans to alligators, Tamarin monkeys to leopards, curious creatures are around every corner. History buffs and archeologists will be excited to visit the numerous archeological sites and settlements dating as far back as 12 thousand years. You want to meet the oldest Americans? Find them here. Alternatively, uncover some dinosaur fossils, from the instantly recognizable Stegosaurus to still newly discovered species. Whatever you want to see, Brazil is the type of country that can fuel your imagination. From adventure to sunshine, excitement to letting loose, this country has it all for you to experience.

Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
Rio is a city filled with just about everything desirable and undesirable in a city of its size. The people are beautiful, the beaches are beautiful and the food is excellent and CHEAP. The downside is that you really need to either stay in safe areas, or have some Brazilian friends if you really want to venture out. Luckily, I had met an exchange student in the U.S. before I travelled to Rio. Once I got there, he took me to all of the cool clubs, the best beaches that tourists don't know about, and restaurants off the beaten path. I never would have seen Rio this way if it was not for him!
Angra dos Reis, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil

Hostel Bambu is the way to go! The guys there are amazing. SOOO helpful!!! You need to allow a half day for the Brazilian side of the falls and a full day for the Argentine side. If visiting the Brazilian side on a short day trip you don't need to do customs or pay for a visa, but if visiting the Argentine side on a day trip you DO need to do customs. From Foz do Iguacu to Rio de Janeiro by bus is R$177 one way(about half that for dollar value.) That was as of mid-2007. They can book it at the hostel for you, they can even book your accomodation in another city for you from that hostel. As I said, the most helpful guys.

Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
one of the best places in brazil, but avoid the southern zone of rio. there you find poodles with strangely colored clothes, old ladies and lots of prostitutes. i really try and avoid copacabana and ipanema... it just sucks. the beaches are kind of interesting, worth a visit if you are really bored. but there are much better beaches out of town (barra da tijuca is one of them or head to any of the beaches outside niteroi).best place for going out all week long: LAPA. used to be a bit off limits for travelers a few years ago, but now it is reasonably safe and hip. you will find something to do most nights, even when it rains. if it rains, rio shuts down. if it rains and the temperature drops below 20 degrees, it appears as if a nuclear bomb had struck the city. nothing will work. nothing. best bet on days and nights like this? stay in bed and get ready for when the sun is shining again.

Niteroi, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
The Modern Art Museum in Niteroi is amazing! A must see if you get a chance. Bus (Double Check this cause my memory is foggy) No. 91 goes from Botofogo to Niteroi (I think it also runs through the city centre), and there is also a ferry you can catch from the city centre (though it is either another bus from the ferry or a bit of a hike.)

Bonito, Central-Western Brazil, Brazil
Rio Preto is an incredibly crytal clear river close to Bonito that delivers an unforgettable snorkeling experience in the midst of thousands of fishes big and small. The river is so clear because the water contains the same substances as do water filters and make the water crystal clear by binding all dirt and make it fall to the bottom.
Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
For the best night life in Rio de Janeiro there is only one place: Lapa. Samba, Chorro, Electronic, Hip Hop, MPB, they got it all. But the best is the street atmosphere. There must be more people hanging around on the streets and drinking and dancing than there are inside the Clubs. My favorites are: Beco de Rato, Clube do Samba Democraticus and Circo Voador
Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
Beware of "capivaras" near central lake... they can be cute, but also can be fiercy animals! :P
Sao Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
Rio Grande, Southern Brazil, Brazil
Sao Paulo, Amazon Region, Brazil
Do NOT wear any brand name items, expensive clothes or lots of jewelry.  As a tourist, you will already stand out, do not draw unnecessary attention.  You will get robbed, and if you buy anything, have them deliver your goods to the hotel you are staying at.  Nothing screams "Rob Me" more than walking around with lots of packages.
Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil, Brazil

Armacao dos Buzios, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
Primer viaje con mi Gordis re lindo lugar playas re lindas, Gente divertida
Mucuripe, Northeastern Brazil, Brazil
Mucuripe is part of Fortaleza in Brazil more or less at the eastern End of the Fortaleza Beach Front. About 20 min. walk from the city center. Still quite safe, compared to Rio or São Paolo. Good restaurants and very nice beaches. Big square in the city center with bars and some clubs, close to the Cultural Center. A lot of young people and good Caipirinhas for about 1.2€ or 2$. To the east and west of Fortaleza huge beaches with dunes where you can have a trip with a buggy! The coast is also well known among kitesurfers
Recife, Northeastern Brazil, Brazil

Foz do Iguacu, Southern Brazil, Brazil
If you wanna stay here to visit Iguzu Falls, you'd rather prefer staying in Puerto Iguazu, which is in Argentina, a few km away Foz. It is cheaper, more funny, there are more activities, and it is much nicer !!!
Campo Grande, Central-Western Brazil, Brazil
The ideal departure point for Pantanal or Paraguay, and the first steps in Brasil when you are comming from Bolivia
Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
A lot of polution, a lot of cars, a lot of people, a very very very huge city, and don't even try to cross a road ... god, where is the magic city of my dreams !!!
Parati, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
Have a boat ride between the tiny islands and save some money to buy local artcrafts! (Talented artists there)
Belo Horizonte, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
big city not so nice to visit, only when you have friends living there.
Foz do Iguacu, Southern Brazil, Brazil
The city is not very nice, there is only one reason one would want to be there: the lovely falls of Iguazu. Don't spread the rumour, but it is much nice to stay just across the border in Argentina. Puerto Iguazu. Small village, friendly people, great food and close to the waterfalls as well.
Manaus, Amazon Region, Brazil
There isn't any better gateway to discover the Amazonas in Brazil!
Tabatinga, Amazon Region, Brazil
Tabatinga is the jumping off point for boats along the Amazon, either heading west to Iquitos in Peru of east to Manaus. Its not a particularly attractive place! If you're coming in from Peru, you will go through passport control on the Peru side, but on the Brazilian side you'll need to find the local police station yourself to show your documents (inc. Yellow fever certificate, very important). Boats to Manaus go 3-4 times a week. Book a spot on the mid-deck (your hostel will help you) arrive early to grab a spot to hook up your hammock (my boat was leaving at 2PM, I hooked up my hammock at 11 and went for lunch, no-one will move it). You can buy hammocks in Tabatinga, but I'd recommend buying one elsewhere. On the boat, take lots to read because there is very little to do apart from watch the river, and you don't see much wildlife apart from birds (and the odd river dolphin if you're lucky). Food on the boats on the Brazil side is OK (I've heard its not so good on the Peru side), and if you get board with it, there's usually a bar/cafe on the top deck selling toasties etc. Bring lots of drinking water though.
Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
If you don't wear too much money with you, and walk without necklaces and expensive watches, you'll probably have a great time - it's marvelous city... Few extra roules: don't go to beach after dark, and don't take camera out too often... While inside crowd, you're safe.
Boa Vista, Amazon Region, Brazil
bring a towel and some flip flops!
Manaus, Amazon Region, Brazil
Really place worth to visit. I advice going on a ship/cruise trip for 1/2 weeks..or some surrvival camp with accomodation in hoomoks in the jungle..worth every money;) I have done it , one of better things that I have ever done

Manaus, Amazon Region, Brazil
The Best guide for Jungle tours and Pico de Nemblina trek is Matthias Raymond..which is highly recommended by Lonely Planet as well...u will not regret if u will use his service...
Joao Pessoa, Northeastern Brazil, Brazil
Joao Pessoa is quiet Brazilian city, located right under the Equator. The city has a nice atmosphere and is relatively safe for travellers, even though caution is always advised. Less than two hours from hot spots like Natal and Recife, Joao Pessoa is still less touristical and for that, much cheaper to visit and shop! The bus system is pretty good, but car rentals or taxis are always a good option. There are many nice malls, and an entire building dedicated to local handcraft where yuo can buy unique and pretty cheap gifts for people at home. Tambau and Manaira are nice beaches about 15 minutes from the city center where you can just sit and enjoy the sun with a chilly caipirinha! Don´t forget to visit the pretty beaches outside of the city like Jacuma or Coqueirinho, you´ll feel like you´re lost in paradise. Watching the sunset in Jacaré is an absolute MUST. There are many bars and restaurants in the area and when the moment approaches, they all play Ravel´s bolero while we just gasp!Romantic and unique! The city also has some historical buildings, like the convent of Sao Francisco, famous for it´s barroque ceiling. Joao Pessoa might not be in most Brazilian guides, but I definitely reccomend it! Go, before everyone finds out about it!
Natal, Northeastern Brazil, Brazil
Belem, Northeastern Brazil, Brazil

Bombinhas, Southern Brazil, Brazil
If you are in Bombinhas, try to find the road at the end of it leading to 4 Ilhas, its not made, (2007) because otherwise to many people are tempted to go there, but it is well worth while. If you arrive there, just on to the beach (at the end of the road) is a "bar" selling coffee and cakes. Just try them and enjoy the view. Perfect !
Guaruja, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil

Belo Horizonte, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
I´ve lived there for three years. It´s true that there is not much to see, but the night life is one of the best in Brazil. 11 women for every man, it´s the official report! Rio de Janeiro, cidade maravilhosa, wonderful, so beautil, you must visit.
Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil, Brazil
I've lived in Porto Alegre for a while and it's a great city! Very good for shopping and you should definitely visit the 'mercado publico'. Ask around for the best parties because there are lots and they really know how to party! Only minus: The city can be quite dirty though and in winter it can get pretty cold. (tip: bring some warm clothes!)
Florianopolis, Southern Brazil, Brazil
Florianópolis is a Beautiful island, linked to the cost by a bridge. This is my home town and it is impossible not like it. I just love this city. Summer time is the best and busiest time to visit it. That because the main atraction are the 100 beaches around. And the 3 laguns in the meddle. Mainly time between Christmans and New Year. It means if u want to stay in the crowd, party and meet a lot of people from all brasil and world... My favorite beaches are Praia Mole, Jurerê Internacional and Praia Brava. It's plenty of beautiful, fit and tan people. There's some beaches like Lagoinha do Leste and Nalfragados that u need to take a boat or do a path to get there, this places u can camping and enjoy the nature. Of course, nowadays u have to be careful everywhere, then is bether to stay by the camping. There's places like Lagoa da Conceição and Ribeirao da Ilha where u can apreciate the native portuguese architecture and very good sea food (u can't miss: pirão de peixe, ostras - the best osters in the country - rodizio de camarão, camarão na abobora). The best places to stay are by the beach, where u can find international hotels or local hostels and void the traffic to get by the sea. Or even rent a house for few weeks. A good choise would be Lagoa da Conceição, where u can go by feet to 3 beaches, and sandboard in the dunes and enjoy the lagun. Some thing that u can't miss is jumping with parashots from the Praia Mole Hill and do some ecological tracking. I think is that. Good travel.

Salvador, Northeastern Brazil, Brazil
Salvador is loud and fun and beautiful. Several times a week, the batería (drumbands that walk the streets) hits the streets... It's great fun to follow them, dance to the rythm and enjoy the energy. Apart from the music and the beautiful colonial buidings, the province of Bahia is famous for it's great food. Don't forget to sample moqueque, a lovely dish of seafood, coconut and spices. Most portions in Brazilian restaurants easily serve two, so if you are travelling alone (as I was), this might be a great chance to invite some streetkids for a bite.
Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
- The nightlife in Rio de Janeiro is incredible. Whether you like Hip Hop, Trance, or Rock, Rio's many bars and clubs will fit your style. Most of the clubs included in our packages have multiple rooms with different styles of music. - The best part about Rio de Janeiro's nightlife is the people. Not only are they some of the sexiest on earth, Rio's locals love to party and are very friendly. - Unlike other huge party cities, Rio's nightlife is spread out all over the city. The hottest clubs are not in the tourist areas like Miami's South Beach or L.A.'s Sunset Strip. If you are not a local, it will be hard to find the hottest spot each night of your stay and if you do find it, it will be difficult to get past the huge lines and bouncers, who do not speak English.

Ilha Grande, Southeastern Brazil, Brazil
