This archipelago of 21 islands located some 350 km off the shores of Brazil became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. These mountainous islands are covered in lush greenery, and their surrounding marine areas feature some spectacular scuba diving spots. The area is protected as a national marine reserve where manta rays, spinner dolphins, lemon shark, sea turtles as well as many other species of fish can be seen. Every morning over 1000 spinner dolphins gather in the Baia dos Golfinhos (Bay of Dolphins) to frolic and play together. Only the main island - Ilha de Fernando de Noronha - is inhabited. Only 420 guests are allowed on the island at any given time, and the untouched parts of the island are dotted with small sustainable tourism resorts and hotels.
