Travel Tips from people who've been to Fortaleza
Fortaleza is a beautiful destination, with warm beaches, great food, and it is personally one of my favorite places to visit. They have a great water park with the wolds highest water slide and some of the nicest beaches I've been to. And the people in Fortaleza for the most part are very friendly although there are those that will rob you blind. But thats to be expected anywhere with poverty stricken areas. So make sure you keep your valuables well guarded when out in the city.
If you don't mind staying in a small room with no glass windows and geckos clinging to the walls at night then there are some great and fairly inexpensive places along the beaches you ccould stay. If you're more of the pampered type then there are some more modern large hotels in the city that might suit you better.
Although the food is pretty good in Brazil you should be cautious of some places and certain foods. I've had friends that ate McDonalds over there and got very sick and I had some strange sea food and got very ill and had to be taken to the hospital. To my surprise the hospital wasn't as bad as I was expecting. The doctor was very nice and I felt like I was better cared for there then if I was home. The only problem I ran into was that when I received my antibiotics they were expired.  But I recovered and it was one of my greatest and most memorable trips. But go to the nicer restaurants and avoid the inconvenience.

When in Fortaleza, take a quick trip to beaches Cumbuco and Morro Branco. The first is sure to make you feel at ease, while the second will not only show a good example of the main traditional means of sea transportation in northeastern Brazil - the jangadas - but also provide a unique feeling from scratching different colors of sands, which turn the place into an attraction as sand design is done inside glass bottle by locals.

Don't stay too much time in Fortaleza... it's just stone and building, specially touristic, and dangerous. Go north, there's nice beaches, and less tourists...
