The British Indian Ocean Territory is an archipelago halfway from Africa to Indonesia with six atolls and over 1000 individual islands, all but one of which is current uninhabited. A small native population of Chagos islanders that once inhabited Diego Garcia, one of the larger islands, were forced to relocate to Mauritius and the Seychelles from 1967 to 1973. Since then, Diego Garcia has been converted into a joint US-UK military base. In other words, the tourist infrastructure isn’t quite here, and might not be for some time.
