This popular cruise port destination is beautiful, with its dramatic landscape and coastline. Volcanic in origin, the British Virgin Islands are part of the Virgin Islands, of which the British portion comprises over 60 different islands. The main Island – Tortola was, like many other Caribbean islands, the site of many sugar plantations. Over at the Cane Garden Bay, you will be able to visit rum distilleries that are still in operation. A hike on Sage Mountain, gives you a view of the entire island, and allows you to admire the magnificent coastlines. Throughout the island, numerous forts remain as a reminder of a more military past. Over on the other islands, the Virgin Gorda is also a popular tourist destination, especially known for the Baths, an unusual geographical formation of rocks forming an assortment of tidal pools by the southern coast. Over in Anegada, visitors are greeted with miles of sand beaches surrounded by Horseshoe Reef – one of the largest barrier coral reefs in the Caribbean and the third largest in the world. This remote part of the BVI is known as a place to relax, and is the home of the Caribbean flamingos and the endangered Anegada rock iguana.
