Bulgaria Travel Guide

This picturesque small country in southeastern Europe is outside of normal major travel circuits, yet offers a wealth of interesting historical buildings and natural attractions, making for a great bargain and great experience.

Veliko Turnovo, the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, was at one point the center of political, cultural and economic activities, and a worthwhile visit for its architecture, which resembles a cascade of stone houses perched one atop another.

The Rila Monastery, founded in the 10^th century, situated on the Rila Mountain, is one of the biggest monasteries in Bulgaria, and features a mutli-tiered arched complex with a distinctive design, as well as a collection of Christian art and intricate wood carvings. It is a World Heritage Site. Nearby is Borovets, one of the country’s oldest winter resorts.

Moving further back in time, Nesebâr, founded in 510 BC, is one of the oldest Thracian settlements. Once an important trading town, an impressive array of remnants remains, from churches that date back to the 5^th century, and renaissance style houses.

Perperikon, known as the sacred rock town of the Thracians is a rock site that was once the site of worship and sacrifice, including the altar of the temple of Dionysus. For those interested in geography, the Belograchik Rocks are an interesting study. Covering an area approximately 30km long, these reddish grey and yellow rocks were formed from natural erosion to form impressive pillars that are in sharp contrast against the lush green background.

The Seven Rila lakes are another beautiful and popular destination. This sequence of 7 terraced lakes change color to reflect the mood of the weather, and are surrounded by a transition of terrain from stark rocks and snow to lush green and flowery meadows in the lower levels.
