A landlocked country with few natural resources and one of the poorest economies in the world, Burkina Faso is nonetheless well known for its friendliness and optimism. It is easier to interact and get a sense of local culture in Burkina Faso than in some of the other West African countries.
Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso’s second largest city, is also considered one of the nicest cities in West Africa, with its vibrant markets, traditional music, and colonial architecture.
Another colorful market is in Gorom Gorom, which attracts traders from many different cultures.
Venturing into Lobi country by Ghana will bring one into contact with the Lobi and their traditions. You can partake in the drinking of firewater while listening to traditional music at their cabarets. In Lobi country you can also visit the ruins at Loripeni, one of the few stone ruins in West Africa.
If you’re looking for more nature-oriented sights, don’t expect massive mountains, as Burkina Faso is quite flat. Do expect other types of beautiful sights, such as the 20-meter high Karfiguela Waterfalls – nestled among mango trees and sugarcane plantations (if it isn’t dry season).
