Burkina Faso

A landlocked country with few natural resources and one of the poorest economies in the world, Burkina Faso is nonetheless well known for its friendliness and optimism. It is easier to interact and get a sense of local culture in Burkina Faso than in some of the other West African countries.

Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso’s second largest city, is also considered one of the nicest cities in West Africa, with its vibrant markets, traditional music, and colonial architecture.

Another colorful market is in Gorom Gorom, which attracts traders from many different cultures.

Venturing into Lobi country by Ghana will bring one into contact with the Lobi and their traditions. You can partake in the drinking of firewater while listening to traditional music at their cabarets. In Lobi country you can also visit the ruins at Loripeni, one of the few stone ruins in West Africa.

If you’re looking for more nature-oriented sights, don’t expect massive mountains, as Burkina Faso is quite flat. Do expect other types of beautiful sights, such as the 20-meter high Karfiguela Waterfalls – nestled among mango trees and sugarcane plantations (if it isn’t dry season).

The Village Artisanal is exactly what it sounds like, a place for local artists to showcase and sell their artworks.  Prices here are fixed (although some negotiation may be allowed but don't expect it to be like in..

I really enjoyed Karfiguela Waterfalls, it's a bit of a hike to get out there from the domes but once you're there you can enjoy a wonderful dip in one of the pools at the top.  We found a wonderful little place that..

Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso
This is the only city I saw in Burkina Faso. I found it to be a quite nice city. It was well kept and for the most part felt safe wandering its streets. One of the things you may want to check out is the Grande Mosquee which was constructed in 1893 and is an excellent example of mud mosques. The Kibidwe District is the old part of town and is interesting to wander around for a little bit. Another thing to check out is the Grande Marche which has quite a few decent souvenir shops.

The laid back capital of western Africa, like Bobo, a good place to relax a bit.  If you like (foreign) film: check to see if the Panafrican Film and Television Festival ( FESPACO ) isn't being held. If you want to splash out a bit on a fancy dinner: L'Eau Vive, a restaurant runned bij some nice nuns.

Sabou, Burkina Faso
