Calgary is a city near the foothills of the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains.  Fabulous hiking, skiing, golfing and other outdoor sports all within a couple of hours drive.    A young city with the average age in the mid thirties Calgary has great restaurants which has attracted European chefs who enjoy the outdoor lifestyle.   Although over the past decade the economy has become diversified, it remains the oil and gas capital of Canada and is very hard working, bustling, vibrant city.  There are plenty of art galleries, museums, ballet and theatre available for entertainment.   The weather, while it can be quite cold in the winter months, enjoys a tremendous amount of sunshine and the famous, regular Chinook winds which can alter the temperature 15-20 degrees C in a few hours.  Calgary is a very friendly city and the home of the famous Calgary Stampede.

When flying to the USA from Canada, be aware that you clear US immigration and customs IN Canada, and NOT the United States. It's bizarre, I know.  This can pose very long queues as there are no separate lines for US citizens vs foreigners. At the Calgary airport, you need to allow at least 2 hours to get through immigrations, security, etc. if you are taking a morning flight. This is especially true on Friday mornings as lots of people are leaving for the weekend. US customs opens at 4:30 AM. I arrived at 4:35 for my 6:30 AM flight and there already was a long queue that took me a half hour to get through. While I was in line, the queue grew quickly. It was at least an hour long.
In the afternoons, it's not usually an issue but morning flights can be hellish.

On the East side of the Canadian Rockies.  Famous for the Stampede in early June every year, probably the greatest show on earth.  Visit Olympic Square every morning the Stampede is on for free breakfast cooked fresh from the back of the "chuck wagons".  Each show day includes traditional rodeo in the afternoon and each evening is chuck wagon racing followed by a great stage show and fireworks.  Graet value for money.  Book tickets on line before you go for great seats at  a good price. Stay out of town at Holiday Inn Express and ride the tram in from the nearby station.

Big city, lots of people, lots of jobs.

I am not a big fan of Calgary, but there is some good skiing close by, and a ton of things to do downtown.

The best thing about this city is that Canmore is close.
