Travel Tips from people who've been to Bamfield

Bamfield is located in a protected inlet on the south shore of Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Those of you who are interested in hiking and / or fishing should definitely have a look at this tiny (population approx. 200) spot, surrounded by breathtaking wilderness only found on the southern west coast of British Columbia, Canada.
It is either the head or the tail (the other town is Port Renfrew) of the famous West Coast Trail, a beautiful hiking trail (ca 77 km or 48 miles) along the coast of the island. The pure beauty of the rain forest, wildlife (lots of whales, seals, birds and other creatures) will always be remembered by those who have seen it.
For the sport fishing fellas the whole area around Bamfield is a major hot spot for world class salmon and halibut fishing, yet not overcrowded like Campbell River and those places. A couple years after hiking the trail I went back for a fishing adventure which was another unforgetable experience. Stayed at the Seabeam fishing resort, which has a simple but uncomplicated infrastructure and interesting and nice clients.

This is a small fishing town on Vancouver Island, there are numerous fishing tour companies that leave from here, however that was not the point of my visit to Bamfield. I came to hike the West Coast Trail. The North trailhead is in Bamfield and I reccomend starting your hike at this trailhead because it is a much easier start than the South end at Port Renfrew. When you are packing a 40-50lbs bag and half of it is food... by the time that you get to the 100 or more ladders and mud bogs at the South end you will be at least 15 pounds lighter! Isn't that an encouraging thought? I'm not saying that the North End is easy it's just easier!

Rad little place to go surfing all by yourself, especially in the winter time ... but you gotta drive 85 km of logging roads to get there.
