I visited this little place in the middle of nowhere in the Autumn of 2000. A tip if your going to drive there, make sure you have a full tank of gas like the sign says! :) After you have that checked off your list, be prepared for a spectacular drive through the heart of Newfoundland. You'll probably start off in Bishops Falls, a few minutes from Grand Falls-Windsor, and take the highway south. It's about 220km's to Harbour Brenton or about a 3 hour drive.
Now the only stop on this 3 hours stretch of highway through the wilderness is a little store at around the half way point that tends to cater to the hunters that like to visit the area in the fall. They run everything off of a gas powered generator but they have most things a little gas station would have, and they also have bathrooms!
When you start running into the rolling rocky hills of southern Newfoundland you'll know your almost there. The final drive into the little village holds some great views. Bring your camera ;)
If your thinking of staying, they now have a great hotel called The Southern Port Hotel. Lots of rooms and good rates.
Things to do? Well do you like rock climbing? Lots of rock climbing on the rocky faces of the surrounding hills and mountains. You can also visit Dead Mans Cove park and take a nice walk along the beach.
But the main thing I recommend to do is, visit the fish plant. They have the biggest freezer I have ever seen!! We're not talking a big freezer in your house, and not even the big walk in freezers they have at the fast food places. This freezer was so big that there was an entire crew on men and machines working in it! MASSIVE! When I first seen the building I was thing maybe a gymnasium or something but when I walked inside and seen it snowing and ice everywhere I was flabbergasted. It was around 23 degrees outside and around -10 inside. A little north pole in the center of a town in the middle of nowhere. And FISH! Fish as far as the eye can see. Fish sticks, fish cakes, fish fillets, fish burgers, everything fish! It was awesome! lol
So after you visit the fish plant ;) be sure to check out the local convenience store and grab some munchies. I forget the name of the place but it was like having a visit to an old friends house. Just wonderful :)
I have to say if you get a chance or if you just like to do things spur of the moment, visit Harbour Brenton. The friendliest people on earth and a beautiful part of Newfoundland that you'll be glad you had the opportunity to experience.
