Travel Tips from people who've been to Hubbards
If you find yourself in Nova Scotia in July, head to Hubbards (30 minutes South of Halifax on Hwy 103) for the World Tuna Flat Rowing Races. Tuna Flats are large boats that are towed behind fishing boats on their way to the traps. They are found only on St. Margaret's Bay and got their name from the fact that 3 or 4 men could stand on one side of the "flat" and haul a large tuna into the boat without capsizing the craft. Teams of 4 race the tuna flats over a quarter-mile course in Hubbards Cove. It's always a great day out with local musicians playing, and a bbq and beer tent available to keep everyone entertained and happy! Good tip? (0) If you want to get a little off the beaten path in Nova Scotia and you're not looking to go too far from Halifax, consider hiking up to Castle Rock. It's a flat rock that sits perfectly above the trees and gives a perfect 360 degree view, including coastline as far as you can see. But it's not easy to find! You'll have to ask a local in Hubbards or Chester to get directions, but it's an easy 45 minute hike up once you know where to go! I'd add it as an attraction, but it doesn't quite fit the mould!
