Cape Verde

A group of islands 500 km off the coast of West Africa, Cape Verde has Portuguese influences from the European colonial days. Their relatively isolated location and lack of highly developed resorts have kept Cape Verde off the tourist radar. The largest and most populous island in the group is Santiago, which contains the capital of Praia. However, most international visitors arrive at the island of Sal, which contains the primary airport and is a notable resort island. The main attraction of Cape Verde comes from experiencing the Cape Verde culture, and not specific sights. For those more interested in scenery, there are several options including the picturesque fishing village of Tarrafal. Of the remaining islands, Fogo has a dramatic and dominating volcano that you can explore, and the associated stunning landscape.

Ilha do Sal, Cape Verde
Went there for two weeks and it was too little. Next time I'd love to spend three or four weeks there. The capeverdean "No Stress" athmosphere is unbelievable and you just want to stay there for the rest of your life...

There are ATMs in town, but they're all Visa only. There aren't any that take Mastercard/Maestro. Everywhere accepts euros but you usually get an exchange rate of 100 escudos, rather than the official one of 110 escudos to the euro.

In this town, you can have a marvellous view towards the sea from Rua Direita. In the evenings, the praça is the place to be. People hang out there, talk, have fun and have drinks at the esplenade.

Beautiful, amazing! Views like you wouldn't believe! It's a great place to set up home base while you take taxis (vans or short buses) around the island. Be sure to do some hiking... you find the most interesting things when you get lost.

L'arcipelago di Capo Verde è bellissimo, ma chi ci va, deve avere bene in mente che non si parla né di Caraibi né di isole dell'Oceano Indiano... ha un fascino particolare, perché il paesaggio è desertico, a tratti lunare, perché la vita è come sospesa fra un cielo sempre plumbeo ed una terra dalla sabbia rossa. Il mare è freddo e quasi sempre molto mosso e quindi fare il bagno non sempre è agevole...

En ørken ø, der findes kun et all inclusive resort, og her skal man bo, resten af øen er kedelig, dog er den god for surfing og dykning kan anbefales. husk solcreme, da solen er meget stærk.

9. Charalampos's Tip on Cidade Velha

Only 15 kms or so from Praia, Cidade Velha is worth the taxi ride to see the fort from above and the crashing waves below, plus an aspect of small-time life on Cape Verde. Not much to do really, but the everyday scenes and the friendly smiles of the people will be enough. I got lucky, was there on May 1 and there was nobody at the fort to charge the entry fee :-)
