One of the poorest countries in Africa, the tourist infrastructure has just not been a priority. Very few of the roads are paved, making the country very difficult to visit during the wet season. The country has been wrought with conflict and even now, travel advisories are in place by several governments. Named after a lake by the same name, Chad is geographically divided into three regions. The northern part of the country extends into the Sahara, within which lies the Tibesti Mountains, a group of dormant volcanoes known to be the home range of the Toubou people. It is also the site of numerous cave paintings. Just south, lies the Ennedi desert, featuring bizarre rock formations, desert lakes, canyons and prehistoric caves. The central part is primarily grass and shrub steppes, whereas the southern zone is woodland savanna. The Bahr Salamat Faunal Reserve, and within it the Zakouma National Park within the southern zone with several conservation areas. There is also a controlled hunting area within this region.
