Car rental agencies in Arica might tell you gas would be available in Putre. It's only partially true. Putre has no gas stations. Gas is available (with substantial surcharge), from the local store and hotel owners. You get much better deals in "official" gas stations near the coast. The same stations sell 20-40 liter containers, locally known as "bidons", which can double and triple your rental car's tank capacity.
