This is one of my favorite cities in the world! I stayed here after I cruzed the Chilian Fjords for 3 days.  You can get the boat headed south from puerto montt and get off in puerto natales or catch it is natales and head north.  It is a big backpackers town for people perparing to enter Torres de Paine NP or who have just exited.  Eitherway there are some great restrurants in town that has a great liberal vibe about it.  People just hanging out in the town square.  A lot of hostals that are very friendly and good cyber cafes for connecting to family before you enter the park.  I forgot the guide company that I used in the park but we entered on boat instead of via bus.  I would strongly recommend you suggest this route to who ever you use as a guide.  They will know what you mean.

Puerto Natales is THE base for hikes into Torres del Paine. Located in this little charming town is a hostel called 'Erratic Rock'. This place is run by very knowledgeble peope, who can provide you with a free breefing every day. The information given is very useful, you can meet up with other hikers here and you can rent anything you need in this same spot.
