Travel Tips from people who've been to Xiamen
Walking around in Xiamen is somewhat not recommended, but being a big fellow with a couple of friend in the same size, it seems to be no danger. This is a city with an overcoming size which contains all of chinese culture - with a western acceptance. From the dense downtown with nothing but skyscrabers to the outscirt with slum and poor existances. Being a scandinavian I recommend to visit "me & you" on the coastline. The owner is Sweedish and VERY friendly - especially toward scandinavian.
Xiamen is an amazing place to go in January to escape the cold of Beijing and Shanghai. Gulangyu is a chilled place to relax and get away from the white tiles of China's generic cities.
a beautiful, clean city by the sea, quite many skyscrapers, people there speak another chinese dialect, but mandarin is totally understood
