Travel Tips from people who've been to Shantou
Shantou in the Guangdong Province in China is a bit of a boomtown. There is an "international" airport and "international" hotels, but most of the clientele are from either Hong Kong or Xiamen. Basically, it's not that international.
Nevertheless, there is a good sized university there with a law school that is now partnering with US law schools for potential study abroad/ exchange programs.
Food - good on duck and pork, but some of the BBQ duck has lots of bones and fat and no meat. This sucks. On the other hand, some of their chicken and pork is great.
Traffic - lots of bikes, lots of buses and cars, equals lots of chaos. Still, it is someone's home. Good tip? (0) Shantou is a city near the cultural center of Chaozhou, and is right near the sea. The cuisine is excellent here, you won't go hungry for sure. The native dialect spoken here is rather hard to learn, though it is most closely related to the dialects of southern Fujian province. Most people will have learned Mandarin or sometimes, Cantonese. Good tip? (0) I had a best fun there. Visit to Sunglow bar next to the Golden Gulf hotel is obligatory. Good tip?
