Indeed very impressive...many of the well preserved caves, were made during the reign of Tang Gao Zhong, also known as Li Zhi, the third emperor of the Tang dynasty. Besides the Longmen Shiku, I would also recommend you to go to the Bai Ma Si (White Horse Temple)...it is whispered that this is the place where "The Journey of the West" started,...further try Rou Jia Mo in Luoyang, this pita like bread prepared in clay oven and with meat inside will not dissapoint you...especially during the cold winters in Henan when the icy winds batter the big plains of province.

luoyang is a good place to stay. it is in henan province and is close to several interesting sites. the best are shaolin temple, longmen grottoes and several small buddhist temples and sites. although you should be careful, henan people are notorious for ripping you off.

The Buddha caves here are amazing. In china, only Dunhuang and Leshan compare in terms of how impressive this place is. It's just a pity they were smashed up so much during the cultural revolution.
