If you're up for an overnight trip trip further south of Yushu, Qinghai, the drive alone is worth the trouble. The trip itself is done in around 6 hours (one-way) in a micro-bus and one passes fantastic landscapes. Nangqen (or Nangchen or Nangqian - many variations) is a small Tibetan town before entering Tibet province. The town is worth exploring and there is a ton of daily life to observe. Walks are abundant along the small river that passes through if you would like to see the countryside. Many temples are being rebuilt and locals will be surprised to see a foreigner.
