Pingyao is not much of a tourist spot. Travelers visiting this area of China tend to stick to more popular destinations such as Xi'an. If you do travel to Pingyao, please add your favorite places in this Pingyao travel guide.
Travel Tips from people who've been to Pingyao
Pingyao is declared World Heritage by Unesco. The city remained the same since the Han dynasty, so you can get a taste here of what old China was like.
The banking in China started here, so you'll find a quite old Qing dynasty bank/museum.
There are city walls around the entire city, which withstood the time quite well. Also some temples in the neighborhood.

You can get a combination ticket for the various places of interest in the tourist booths. Take a student card (random card which says student & has your pic) to get a good discount.

I found some hostel representative at the train station, the hostel was quite nice & the room came with bikes for everyone. Quite handy to move around, and you can ride to some nearby monasteries. Ask for a map in the hostel.

You can withdraw money just outside the old city walls, there's an int'l bank there.
