Lhasa is the capital of Tibet, and is traditionally the seat of the Dalai Lama.  It is considered the holiest centre of Tibet and is a destination point for many pilgrims.  Lhasa is located within the Lhasa Valley and is surrounded by mountains.  Within Lhasa, the most famous landmark is Potala Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In 2006, the Lhasa Railway was built connecting Lhasa to Xining.  It is the highest plateau railway in the world, running a length of 2000km.

Phuntsok Khasang International Youth Hostel - Exellent view to Potala palace, 3 minutes waking to johkang square!
Don't take the dormitory, dormitories are too cold and the showers are pretty bad, take a private room decorate in Japanese style very comfortable and not expensive.
With a panoramic restaurant, fantastically decorated in Tibetan style and amazing view to Potala Palace they serve you delicious Tibetan food, there are 6 Pc's with fast internet and Tibetan chill out music all day long. This is the place to be if you are stuck at the hostel on the cold  nights.

Drink some tea with the nuns at the Ani Sangkhung nunnery in the Tibetan area of Lhasa. It's a bit difficult to find as there are now (readable) signs on the outside, but the nunnery is located in one of the small streets in the southeast of the Barkhor area, near the mosque.

My recommendation is to have your bus break down in the middle of nowhere and to simply climb the nearest mountain. It will be amazingly beautiful and exhilarating, until you pass out from a lack of oxygen.
