Puerto Viejo is a small town with beautiful, movie scenic beaches. The water is warm, palm trees tall, and sun high. The night life is a lot of fun, but be careful because there are a lot of drugs in this neighborhood. Samford's was a nice place for pricey food and then lots of dancing.   While in Puerto Viejo, be sure to walk over or head to Puerto Cahuita, which has a beautiful beach.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Puerto Viejo
I had my best pizza ever in Puerto Viejo, in a waterfront restaurant close to the police station, the traditional oven is outside in the garden. (and believe me, I've had many pizzas in Italy aswell)
Good tip?

i had an incredible time in puerto viejo. theres a lot of diversity; many travelers from all over the world. the locals are happy to talk in english and most are extremely friendly and kind. they have no qualms about americans, unlike many other spots. theres wild horses walking the streetes, and lots of realllly great food. theres also a really fun skatepark for youth and great (and intense) surfing. rent a bike to "hole in the rock" ,a park about four miles north but well worth the ride. viejo is a small town with lots of culture, but there is a really bad hidden drug problem, and its not a good idea for a woman, especially a foregner to walk the streets alone. oh and the exchange ratge is awesome.

Puerto Viejo is very laid back. Surfer/hippie/gypsy paradise. Rocking J's is a great hostel to stay. Great prices, all the staff are very friendly and helpful, and there's usually something going on every night. just ask anyone around (you'll more than likely meet some great people around there) what's going on that night. There's usually bonfires on the beach behind J's a few nights a week. J's brother Eric owns the attached restaurant. he makes the best  Pad Thai! If you're a surfer, leave plenty of room for the locals, they're very territorial of their waves.
