About Costa Rica Planning a Trip to Costa Rica
Carate, Pacific Coast, Costa Rica Travel Like A Local The cheapest way to get between Puerto Jimenez and Carate is definitely by taking the colectivo. It’s also a great way to feel like a local. The colectivo is basically a pickup truck with a tarp fashioned over the truck bed to act as a roof / sun protection. Two wooden planks are fixed to each side of the truck bed. It’s not the most comfortable seat in the world, but it’s a fun way to travel. And be aware that the roads are unpaved so expect a bumpy ride. If you’re taking the colectivo get there early to get the best seat (the ones nearest the truck cab). They squeeze in as many people as they can for the ride so prepared to be cozy. We had 4 people sitting on each plank and three standing up, hanging off the back, then another 2 adults and 2 children smooshed into the cab along with the driver. If the colectivo fills up many times they will call for another one to pick up the passengers they can’t fit, but that’s not always possible. They turned away passengers on our trip and denied them another colectivo, another reason to get there early. The ride between Puerto Jimenez and Carate takes about 2 hours and the driver will stop for a 5 minute break halfway through the ride. The cost is $7 US one way. Leaves Puerto Jimenez for Carate: 6 am 1:30 pm daily. Leaves Carate for Puerto Jimenez: 8:30 am 3:00 pm daily. Good tip? (0) Hacienda Monteverde, Northwestern Costa Rica, Costa Rica Monteverde is where all tourists go in Costa Rica . Nevertheless it is worth going there. It is beautiful and there is so much to do! If you go there, please do sleep at Hostel Jireh in Santa Elena! The owner Guillermo, a young, enthusiastic Costa Rican guy, who just started the hostel, will make sure you will have the best time ever! The place is small and simple, but very very cheap, clean and you have everything you'll need (kitchen, great breakfast, internet, hot shower, excellent advice concerning trips and possibility to book them), plus the best service! We didn't want to leave because we had such an amazing time. The atmosphere is very cosy, it feels like you're one family. Guillermo introduces all backpackers to each other, organises barbecues and even goes dancing with you! Please have a look at: www.hosteljireh.com Good tip? (0) Puerto Viejo, Carribean Coast, Costa Rica For surfers. Ask for El Tesoro...a nice hostel, with bikes, internet, food and it's close to the break, which the town isn't. so in el tosoro you're a little out of town (5min by bike) but close to the break, which was very nice. Good tip? (0) Tilaran, Northwestern Costa Rica, Costa Rica Tilaran is the jumping off point for backpackers and other close-to-the-ground travellers exploring the Arenal region in Costa Rica. In Tilaran, you can sleep cheap, eat cheap, and catch a bus to the surrounding sights.
It costs more money to stay closer to the volcano in one of the expensive resorts or Hotels.
You can stay in a modest hotel or even a backpackers hostel for a couple bucks a night in Tilaran.
Need cheap eats? Look for "Soda" - that means "lunch counter." Order whatever chicken dish is the specialty that day. Should be less than $3.
Costa Rica in general, and Tilaran specifically is not known for nightlife. But at least here in town, there is a street festival nearly every weekend. Get out and mingle with the locals and eat street food.
Tilaran is where you can find internet access or internet cafe, and find a cash machine. Once you leave town on your adventure, there will not be phones, internet or cash machines.
This is the jumping off point for organized tours. Stop in any of the tourist offices to book your 4-wheel tour, rent scooters, book your river rafting tour, join a canopy tour, or book a bus tour to the volcano.

We travelled all over and felt just as safe there if not safer than in Canada. Good tip? (0) Arenal, Northwestern Costa Rica, Costa Rica arenal étais magnifique !!!! (0) San Jose, San Jose & Surrounding Region, Costa Rica SJO International Airport If you’re flying to Costa Rica, chances are you’ll be arriving into the capital city of San Jose. The majority of international flights depart and arrive from Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose. The rest fly through Liberia in the north. SJO is located 20 km from the city of San Jose and 3 km from Alajuela. The airport is on the small side, but has all the amenities of a major airport, including bars, Duty Free and American fast food joints. Sansa Air, one of the two airlines that flies domestically in Costa Rica, also uses SJO as it’s home base of operations. The airport is small enough that if you’re changing planes you won’t have too many problems finding your connection but since Costa Rica is such a popular tourist destination be prepared for long lines at the ticket counters and customs. If you are connecting to a flight on Nature Air (the other domestic airline in CR) you will need to take a taxi to the Pavas International Airport in the city of San Jose. It’s approximately a 30 minute ride between the airports. Also know that if you’re flying from SJO into the United States you can buy liquor at the Duty Free, but you’ll need place the bottles in your checked luggage once you get to the USA if you’re on a connecting flight. Good tip? (0) Costa Rica Forget Traveler's checks, and take an ATM card that is Visa. The Master Card ones only work at the ATM's of foreign banks which can be hard to find outside of San Jose. Also, due to frequent loss of power and communications when you get out of the city, ATM's frequently don't work so you should always have extra cash on you. Good tip? (0) Mal Pais, Pacific Coast, Costa Rica most beautiful place beach in costa rica visit Good tip? (+3) Jaco, Pacific Coast, Costa Rica There are cooler places to stay than the Best Western...we stayed at a hotel closer to the action. It had a pool, a bar and a parrot in the courtyard, and we got free vouchers for the casino. Good tip? (+1) Puerto Viejo, Central Valley & Highlands, Costa Rica Puerto Viejo is a beautiful place to stay. You can lay in the beach or drink a Ron with Cola at night. Don't forget to visit Maxi's at Manzanillo to have lunch!! Good tip? (+1) Jaco, Pacific Coast, Costa Rica jaco is a surfer hub in southern costa rica. Much better off going to Hermosa or Estillos Este to catch good waves. Jaco is a party town; lots of alcohol, drugs and hookers. Good tip? (+1) Puerto Cahuita, Carribean Coast, Costa Rica Walk thru the National Park next to the beach and follow the path a while to get to a big lonely beach. Be aware of the Monkeys-if u eat something they come and get agressive Good tip? (+1) Bradt Travel Guides |
