Cote d'Ivoire

Also known as the Cote d’Ivoire, the Ivory Coast was once one of the most prosperous countries in Africa. It is the world’s leading producer of cocoa and a major coffee producer as well. The prosperity combined with ties with France made Abidjan the “Paris of West Africa.”  In more recent times, the Ivory Coast has struggled with a civil war that left the country split in two. If the situation improves there are a number of worthwhile sights. Abidjan is a gleaming metropolis and one of the most modern cities in West Africa.  It contains the massive Cathedrale St. Paul. The coast west of Abidjan has many excellent beaches and interesting lagoons. The capital of Yamoussoukro was a small village before President Houphouet-Boigny decided to turn his hometown into a major center. Yamoussoukro contains a number of luxurious buildings and the Basilique de Notre Dame de la Paix, the largest cathedral in the world. Around the town of Man, you can explore the surrounding mountains as well as see many rope bridges in the region. The Parc National de la Comoe is located in the northeast of the Ivory Coast. It is a bit inaccessible, but quite wild, and contains many animals worth seeing. For animals in a more tame setting you can visit the monkey village of Soko.

The Basilica in Yamoussoukro is one of the nicest landmarks in Cote d'Ivoire. It was constructed during Felix Houphouet Boigny's time and I believe features the second largest dome of any basilica in the world. This..

Yamoussoukro, Cote d'Ivoire
The one must thing to see in Yamoussoukro is the Basillique De Notre Dam De La Paix. I remember arriving into Yamoussoukro and seeing the giant dome off in the distance. The dome is only slightly shorter the St. Peters because of Papal request. It has 7400 sq metres of stained glass windows and like 7000 or 8000 individual air conditions seats although they are rarely turned on. It was really quite the sight to see considering it's location. And it only cost US$ 300,000,000 to construct.

Another kick is to go the Ivory Hotel and see the only ice rink north of the Zambezi River.. not sure it has ever had ice, but what the hell.. Also, a visit to the Banco Forest is neat.

If you can find someone trust worthy to show you around that would be the best, Ivory hotel will make you a ridiculous deal if you bargain hard with them, and the pools is clean, but DO NOT TAKE A PICTURE OF THE HOTEL, unless you want to end up getting arrested or your camera taken, then be very polite and show them the pics if you have a digital camera or else your role of film is gone

Yamoussoukro, Cote d'Ivoire
If you can make it here without losing all of your money at the excessive number of check points check out the Basillique De Notre Dam De La Paix , its absolutely amazing, I was there for Christmas and went to a service, not religious, but it gives you time to just sit there and enjoy the stain glass windows and the architecture! Look up at the Dome if its sunny out its amazing. If you feel adventurous check it out at night, and snap a few pictures be careful but it is magnificent at night. Oh and if you want to sit through the service then you don't have to pay anything to go inside

Been there some years ago. Was a beautiful but poor country. Now it's a "very difficult" place. Not for tourists... Sad.

Yamoussoukro, Cote d'Ivoire
A sleepy tropical village grown to metropolis because of being the birth place of Pres. Houphouet-Boigny. Is dominated by a vast Catholic church and health centre, which is officially Vatican Territory. The church has several hectares of stained glass, with only two Africans represented, Houphuet-Boigny keels at the feet of the infant Christ together with the three Magi, on of whom is an African. Abundance and poverty coexist, leading to some emotional dissonance at the sight of both. Focus on the people and not on the extravagance, or extravagant lack, of things, they are wonderful.
