Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of Croatia. Zagreb is the cultural, scientific, cinematic, economic and governmental center of the Republic of Croatia. According to the city government, the population of Zagreb in 2006 was 784,900 (approx. 1.2 million in the metropolitan area). It is situated between the southern slopes of the Maedvednica mountain and both northern and southern bank of the Sava river at an elevation of approximately 122 m (400 ft) above sea level. Its favorable geographic position in the southwestern part of the Pannonian Basin, which extends to the Alpine, Dinaric, Adriatic and Pannonic regions, provides an excellent connection for traffic between Central Europe and the Adriatic Sea. The transport connections, concentration of industry, scientific and research institutions and industrial tradition underlie its leading economic position in Croatia. Zagreb is the seat of the central government, administrative bodies and almost all goverment ministries. Atracts tourists from all around the world.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Zagreb
The Croatian capital has lots to see by way of museums, parks and the like... but would rather suggest spending your time on the coast, Dubrovnik upwards, hopping off at as many cities there as you can... but perhaps a couple of days at Zagreb is still worth it ... for a more East European or Balkan feel to Croatia, as against the Mediterranean feel its coast offers... Good tip? (+3) Go to GORNJI GRAD, or on the main square Trg Bana Josipa Jelačića, you'll have plenty things to see.... Good tip? (+2) The centre of Zagreb is split into a lower and upper section. All the major attractions are close by to the main square near a tram stop. There is a 'railway' called the 'Old Lady of Zagreb' which takes you to the upper level and back. The ride lasts about a minute and it's cheap to go on. You can walk up the hill but it's fun to take the ride at least once. St Marks Church is at the top and its tiled roof with national emblems is good to look at. There are museums nearby including one containing the broken remains of furniture destroyed during the Balkans War. Croats are very passionate about their country, and a night at a bar watching the football is a rowdy experience! I also visited the KSet club on the outskirts of the city, which was a good experience, and cheap prices. Good tip? (0)
