Having so much more to offer than the iconic white-sand beaches and resort strips we get to see so often in travel ads, Cuba is a country whose unique cultural heritage rarely gets explored to the extent it deserves. Still operating as a socialist state under Fidel Castro almost half a century after the same man marched into Havana to transform the country’s political field forever, the country’s economy suffers from the trade embargoes placed on it by the Unites States. Yet Cubans always improvise their way around the troubles they face and usually come out smiling in the end. Havana, likely the most interesting capital city in all of the Caribbean, is dominated by gorgeous colonial-style buildings and quirky antique cars repainted with bold if not downright outlandish colors. From the vibrant dance styles witnessed in Cuban street parties, to the sugar cane fields and rum factories, to the almost comical communist propaganda displayed on enormous billboards across the country, this island country is a real pleasure to discover.
