Cuba

Having so much more to offer than the iconic white-sand beaches and resort strips we get to see so often in travel ads, Cuba is a country whose unique cultural heritage rarely gets explored to the extent it deserves. Still operating as a socialist state under Fidel Castro almost half a century after the same man marched into Havana to transform the country’s political field forever, the country’s economy suffers from the trade embargoes placed on it by the Unites States. Yet Cubans always improvise their way around the troubles they face and usually come out smiling in the end. Havana, likely the most interesting capital city in all of the Caribbean, is dominated by gorgeous colonial-style buildings and quirky antique cars repainted with bold if not downright outlandish colors. From the vibrant dance styles witnessed in Cuban street parties, to the sugar cane fields and rum factories, to the almost comical communist propaganda displayed on enormous billboards across the country, this island country is a real pleasure to discover.

Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
If staying in Varadero it is very worth your while to make the trip to Havana for a real taste of what Cuba is about.
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
very nice beaches, good idea to bring your old clothes and other things to give to the locals
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
if going to Cuba...go to Varadero, the beach's are white and beautiful. Also bring small gifts to leave in your hotel for the staff, they really appreciate it and won't get into trouble. I was told that if you left money they could be accused of stealing. I left soaps, make-up, pens, etc.
Santiago de Cuba, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Castillo de San Pedro del Morro is one of the best places off the beaten track. An old Spanish castle used for the town protection from pirates. If you are approaching it from the beach side driven by the Lonely planet guide recommendations, don't even try...unless you want to shoot Indiana Johns V :-)In Santiago de Cuba, Chinese restaurant is big "NO NO" unless you need something to cheer up your belly and digestion system.
Guama, Central Cuba, Cuba
Try croco meat and drink coco milk after! M-m-m-m...taste great! And don't bring many staff with u, it's bothering!!!! Camera, money and sun-bathing lotion will be enough.
Santa Clara, Central Cuba, Cuba
Only Che's memorial is here
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
In Cuba, probably the less nicest place: a lot of tourists and local male and female prostitutes
Santiago de Cuba, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Clima cálido pero con mucha brisa.
Trinidad, Central Cuba, Cuba
A superb place to stay in Cuba. The peninsula Ancon is just 15 minutes away from the colonial town of Trinidad. Bonus: you will be far from the greatest mass of tourists in places like Varadero...
Vinales, Western Cuba, Cuba
gorgeous valley with photogenic fields of tobacco, and a very cool rockclimbing scene. bring what you have, someone will help you out with the rest of the gear, anchor you, whatever.
Cayo Coco, Isla de la Juventud, Cuba
Stayed at the Tryp. Beautiful clear blue water, shallow beach and had to beware of jellyfish. Relaxing days at the beach followed by drinks at the swim up pool bar.
Santa Clara, Central Cuba, Cuba
A fairly sleepy town, Santa Clara is probably most visited for the Memorial to Che Guevara in Plaza de la Revolucion. However the town itself has a few other things worth seeing such as the Museo de Artes Decorativas the Tren Blindado Monument.
Remedios, Central Cuba, Cuba
Lovely little town. The cathedral has a beautiful gold leaf altarpiece. Amazing for such a small place. If you're in Cuba over Christmas, you must head to Remedios for the Christmas Eve parranda (fireworks battle). 16 hours of non-stop firework action is sure to bust your eardrums and give you memories for life!
Pinar del Rio, Western Cuba, Cuba
Not much to see here except the guayabita (guava liquor) factory. Visit during the week as the factory is closed on Sunday.
Playa Giron, Central Cuba, Cuba
Fantastic beach side town with only one street. People are very friendly and all you need to do is ask at your casa particular and they'll arrange stuff from scuba diving to transport (and of course food) for you.
Trinidad, Central Cuba, Cuba
While firmly on the tourist route, the feel of the town is very relaxed as locals are very welcoming to tourists. I got the impression that they genuinely like tourists rather than just their money (unlike places like Vinales). Practise your salsa moves at Casa de la Musica and Casa de la Trova which are very close to each other. Some locals may approach you to offer private lessons: go ahead, they're fun!
Holguin, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
If you arrive in Holguin without a place to stay take a hotel bus to the resorts north of Holguin and then bargain with them for a room. You can get a $200.00 all inclusive room for $25.00 US.
Trinidad, Central Cuba, Cuba
The oldest roads in Cuba. Beautiful houses, all the posters come from here!
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
Atlantic ocean here Iam!
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
In Varadero don't hesitate to take local transportation instead of your hotels bus service like a coconut cab. It's way more fun and supports the locals too.
Pinar del Rio, Western Cuba, Cuba
Step away from the Guayabita.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Get robbed in Vedado at least once. You get to see a whole different side of Cuba by sitting in police stations and cop cars.
Vinales, Western Cuba, Cuba
Don't plan too long a trip to Viñales if you're not incredibly fond of being outdoors.
Remedios, Central Cuba, Cuba
This is the real Cuba. Beautiful cathedral: ask the priest to take you up the crumbling stairs of the tower. Wonderful hotel on the same main square.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Great city, always felt safe. Take the typical precautions for any major city and you'll be fine.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Daquiry, Samba, Sea and Sun! Ernest Heminway knew better!
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
awesome! make sure to go on tours and see the architecture
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Fab architecture. Be sure to check out the Cuban section of the Art Museum. Amazing.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Great city to take a tour of. Great architecture.
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
Beautiful beaches, resorts, lots of drinks "all inclusive", sun and sea and ...... aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh that's life!
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
The beaches are great but you have to go else where or take an excursion if yiou want to snorkel.
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
Great beaches and resorts. Very similar to mexico howerver.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Glad I saw it while Castro still ruled the world there. It's an amazing feeling to stand on the famous square where he held all his marathon speeches. Also great to visit a tobacco factory and rum distilery.
Pilon de Cauto, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
at dusk dawn thousands of crabs cross the hwy from the ocean to the cliffs ... absolutely amazing! its one of those thins that u have to see to beleive.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
One of the things you must see is the bar where Ernest Hemmingway frequented while he stayed in Cuba. And while in the bar, you should order a Mojito (a Cuban drink) because they make the best Mojito in whole Cuba.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
-Spend hours in Malecon (drink, smoke, kiss)-Avoid Convertibles (use peso locale)-Stay at casa particular
Vinales, Western Cuba, Cuba
robaina cigars :-) cuban rhum of course.
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
bring some meds! imodium and asprin will most definitely help when you have unlimited drinks and food!
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
As in any big city, walk. Don't take buses, don't rent a guide, just walk around and talk to the people. Havanna will stay interesting even after a week of walking around.
Trinidad, Central Cuba, Cuba
The most beautiful place on Cuba, which says a lot, as many places are worth visiting.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Beautiful city, great architecture, music, and history. Try to visit Habana without a guide, it's much more fun. Unless you want to hear about dozens of things you'll soon forget anyway. It's very important to know the Cuban history and economy before going to Cuba, it explainy why locals are keen on getting our money (peso convertible and $) et cetera. In summary: A City you must visit, especially before the U.S. has the chance to destroy its very own charme and cultur
Santa Clara, Central Cuba, Cuba
Hasta la victoria siempre!! ciudad del Ché, have to visit it...
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Stroll along the Malecon to see the real Havana. You'll get a lot of people trying to flog you booze, drugs and girls, but if you're lucky you'll also meet some genuinely nice people. Don't fall for the hype with all the Hemingway-esque bars etc. La Floridita is seriously overrated, there are way better bars nearby, particularly on Obispo, where you can hear some great Salsa.
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
The beaches and hotels are amazing with plenty of sun, but if your impatient dont bother taking the buses or getting frutsrated at the time, the buses come when they feel like it and not on a time table. I waited 45 minutes for a bus to come when i was there.
Trinidad, Central Cuba, Cuba
almost every night there is a great fiesta for everyone in the center of the town. is free and you can learn to danse by cuban people!
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
Most gorgeous, white sand beaches.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Havana is really boring. I mean it is like a rich Caribbean country with crappy Russian and Chinese cars, no infrastructure, and millions of cans of identical soda in the hard currency supermarkets. If you want to see Russian crappiness, go to the former soviet union and see the real thing, not this watered down version that is basically only popular because of the anti-american propaganda everywhere - really Havana is boring. I did enjoy when they sprayed the old historical center with a mixture of DDT and petroleum to kill mosquitoes to fight dengue fever - really funny because I watched from the sea side when they sprayed it on the highway and blew into the old town and my friends needed gas masks practically to get back to the bus ;) Really it is a shithole... Not worth the hassle of getting a travel license if you ask me!
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
Absolutely horrible place! Nothing but Euro-trash, crappy food, and people only thinking it is cool because of the US blockade. Remember Taiwan is even worsely treated by its bigger neighbor and even is banned from the UN and other international organizations and they seem to not have half the sympathy of the Cuban regime among Euros... Very hypocritical if you ask me, especially since Taiwan is much more attractive in terms of seaside and its culture of resistance than Cuba, which is a real dump.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
take a few days to see the city amazing architecture friendly people hmm good music avoid alleys as can be a bit dodgy....great place to meet people as locals can speak mulitiple languages may 1 is labour day big time in havana
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
Except the beach, there isn't much to do there. leave this plave and go to La Habana instead!
Vedado, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Look out for a local bar, get some rum a cigar, make sure the cigar is not fake, because sometimes they come to you with a authentic box and cigars that are dry and dont have the brand ribon on it. At night dont walk with camera or anything that can be ripped out your hand in a runby theft.
Trinidad, Central Cuba, Cuba
"La Casa de la musica" is the best place to take a mojito and enjoy salsa muisc and dancing! simply great.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Leave your signature on the walls of the "boteguita del Medio"
Dupont, Central Cuba, Cuba
One of the nicest places in area. Visit the mansion Xanandu.
Baracoa, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
you have to try hot chocolate producced in Baracoa...or take a mini bus and go to the beach...
Santiago de Cuba, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
If you travel with regular bus lines (via azul) have extra jacket because they dont't know how to use air condition..and you will freezze. We were travelling from HAvana to Santiago (13 hrs) and bus driver had AC on 10
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
If you are in Habana and your a Salsa dancer, check out the Casa de la Musica! Most time, big bands like "Los Van Van" or "Pupy" give concerts there! (If they are not on tour in Europe)Adress:Casa de la Musica Calle Galiano e/ Neptuno y Concordia, Centro Habana,
Santiago de Cuba, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
I like Santiago de Cuba, because my friends live there! If you travel to Santiago, check out the "Casa de la Musica" in the center of the City. If you need a place to stay (Casa particular) contact me, I can give you an address.
Holguin, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Boring city (few parks though). Don't go there unless you need to ...
Santiago de Cuba, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Nice city! Watch your back during carnaval though... city gets slightly more dangerous then (although in general, Cuba is a very save country for tourists to travel)
Maria la Gorda, Western Cuba, Cuba
When you arrive in Cuba and you want to visit the (only) hotel in Maria la Gorda you better make a reservation immediately! We combined a visit to Aquas Claras (1 night), nice horseback riding, with a unbelievable, unforgettable ride to Maria La Gorda (Maria the fat).A stay there will make you very happy. Quiet, nice beaches, only the food is not very well but I think that is a problem in Cuba.Enjoy
Vinales, Western Cuba, Cuba
We stayed 2 nights in the house of a woman called Gloria. The bed was horrible, the food was worse, ... but the people don't have much so it was not realy a problem. Some nice memories from this staying. We were sitting on the porch and the lady of the house wanted to protect us against insects so she lit about 10 special candles which produced so much smoke (which smelled like hell) we could not see eachother anymore. An other one is that every mojito we drank was filled with ants (because the sugar bowl was full of them). They straws we used where dirty inside because she cleaned them after use and re-used them.We went horseback riding and asked for the best horses. Instead we got 4 very old horses, one of them died during our 1 hour ride through the mountains.Vinales is nice dough an defenetly a place in Cuba you must visit.Enjoy!
Cayos Santa Maria, Central Cuba, Cuba
Trinidad, Central Cuba, Cuba
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Careful La Habana great and full of Culture City, has problems like all the cities in the World, first, carefull with local people always try to keep well all your valuable Sutffs (passport, money) because it's usual the pick poketing in all the city, remember don't accept the touring to the Paladares (local food restaurantes in houses) because it can cost you double because the give comission to the guy that guide you to those places. You can Enjoy Cuba with all the cares you need for a save travel and try to always let your passport at the safebox in the Hotel.
Bariay, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Cayo Bariay is where Christopher Colombus landed when he 'discovered' Cuba. You tour the park by horse and buggy. educational
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
A great beach with great people, My Impression about Varadero was totally diffrent that what I had before going to that great beach, I saw that it's so different that all Cuba because it's look like a common beach of Mexico with great hotels, and great beaches, but the difference it's the age of those hotels that they look about 70's, although the service it's great and very warmly.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Bring as much of your own food as you can - most of the food in Havana is barely edible.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Walking is a great way to see the parts of the city you wouldn't normally see. Otherwise taxis are cheap ... and no trip to Havana is complete without at least one ride in a 1950s American car.
Baracoa, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Search Playa Blanca, you are alone on this beach!
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba

Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
Don't go there! It's boring and there are no locals living there, it's seriously nothing but a way to expensive assembly point for tourists. And you don't have to fly all the way to Cuba to get tanned, you can do that in a tanning booth at home- and Cuba has a lot more to offer. Better visit Havana or other cities, but be carful if you're planning on renting a car, because there are no road signs in areas where tourist usually don't go, so don't forget to bring a map!
Guantanamo, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
bring your SCUBA gear! some great diving!
Santiago de Cuba, Eastern Cuba, Cuba

Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Clubs ''Casa de la musica''.There is one in the centre and one in Miramar. You will find there the best live cuban groups
Vinales, Western Cuba, Cuba
was one of the most enjoyable places in cuba for me. met some really friendly people, hung out drinking and dancing every night and did some trips around the country side. there are some hills to explore, some waterfall about 10 km away from town and some beaches ever further north. not much is happening there apart from some tourism and agriculture. highly recommended for a chilled out experience. however, i have to say i have been there in 2000, not sure what it is like these days.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
cubans are cool and will help you to find your way around. US $ is the currency there.
Holguin, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Be careful: paying to see the dolphins is a trap!
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
El único lugar puro del mundo
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Enjoy the atmosphere, take a tour of the city and look out for the trucks converted into buses and the limousine ladas
Santiago de Cuba, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
get everything you ever wanted! just let your "friends" organise it..;-
Santa Clara, Central Cuba, Cuba
Mausoleum Ernesto Che Guevara
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
Always bring plenty of clothes and toiletries to hand out to locals. Whilst these goods seem trivial to Europeans or Americans, the boycott makes especially toiletries extremely expensives, especially for locals.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
The Tropicana nightclub is a music and dance floor show not to be missed when in Havana. The dancers have the most lavish colourful costumes and certainly gives The Moulin Rouge in Paris a run for it's money. The Floridita Bar worth a visit for a few Daiquiris, there is a statue of the late Ernest Hemingway standing at the bar ideal pic for the holiday album.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Buy art in Havana. There are regular street art festivals and some of the art is really, really good. We bought some pieces from an art professor. They were wonderful and cost $90-$120. A steal. He was delighted that we bought three pieces. His monthly salary, hold onto your hat for this one, after sixteen years of teaching, was about $28 (US). That is not a typo: $28. Some day this art will be worth A LOT more than you paid for it. In the meantime, you can enjoy their beauty knowing you helped a truly struggling artist.
Holguin, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Stayed in the Brisas Guardalavaca, a 24 hr all inculsive hotel at the beach, the resort was lovely with excellent staff that attend to your every need with a smile. We always tip them well as the Cuban people dont earn that much and they are such nice people. I usually dish out my clothes and toilettries at the end of the holiday they truly appreciate anything you give them, and it makes the case much lighter for coming home. There are plenty of trips to do or just walk along the beach to the daily souvenier market then laze about eating and drinking in between. Swimming with the dolphins was fantastic as was our 2 day trip to Havana you fly up there in the morning coach picks you up from aiport you do some sightseeing and have lunch in between, then to the Melia Hotel very plush, after dinner your taken by coach to the Tropicana Nightclub brilliant show where drinks are provided, then back to the Melia for overnight stay, next day bit more sightseeing in Havana city which includes a market wish I'd bought goodies (will do it on my next visit in November 08). Fly back to Holguin coach takes you back to the Brisas. Highly recommend doing this trip think it cost about £150 each but was well worth it as all food and drink is included in price. So it's not that expensive when you see what you get for your money.
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
Glitzy tourist enclosure within grubby Cuba outside ... the feeling starts the moment your hotel staff ties those colourful bands on your wrist ... pronouncing that "you are the privileged tourist and they the common locals ... and never the twain shall meet"... of course Varadero is fun for its lux beaches and on-the-house drink and food if you have bought one of those packages ... but if you want to see real Cuba, step out, even if stealthily, and mix with the locals ... go to Havana, of course, but also go to Cardenas, Matanzas and further on... tour packs often offer Varadero as the main course with a bit of Havana or so on the side ... its worth reversing the scheme at your own cost, assuming packages are often the way to get into Cuba, and venturing into the real local Cuba a bit - even staying at extra cost in Havana or another city with a family - gives a totally new view ... and you'll enjoy the cigars much more there...
El Cobre, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Buy on the way sun flowers to bring with you to the church :-)
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Worth while to hire a cab and a personal guide to tour the city, great value for money, takes in all the sites and tailors the tour to your own needs.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Try to get off the tourist trail and hook up with some young cubans.... parties, open air free gigs and rum!
Matanzas, Central Cuba, Cuba
A real Cuban city for a slice of real Cuban life ... see people go about their ways... see communism in action ... see some impressive buildings too and numerous bookstores and parks... see Fidel Castro and Che Guavera pasted here and there... try and mix with the locals here and get here on a local bus too if you can... it gives a much more authentic experience of Cuba than sun-bathing in tourist enclosures like Varadero...just walk around the city...
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
drink mojito and daiquiri there :D
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
Non andateci, non è Cuba Don't go there, it isn't real Cuba
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
La Bodeguita Del Medio, El Malecón, Habana Viejo, just the places to be! I would immediately go again.
Cienfuegos, Central Cuba, Cuba
i like it.It is good.
Cayo Coco, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Mozzies.. Cayo Coco is situated next to mangroves, so the Mozzies are in abundance. Stay in a hotel which sprays nightly. Covering yourself in Cuban rum also helps!!!
Trinidad, Central Cuba, Cuba
Trinidad, in Cuba that is, is a great little place to catch Cuban life in slow motion... climb up its rooftops for aerial views of lazy life below, check out groups of men whiling away time on street corners over board games, watch older folk sitting along edges of walls smoking cigars, or women weaving handmade stuff and men carting merchandise on horsecarts, browse through small shops selling handicraft knick-knacks, or take one of those cute-looking yellow mini coco-taxis for a ride through the city...eat at the Plaza Mayor (a bit used to tourists but still ok)...see Trinidad's art museum ... and walk on its pebbled slanting streets...
Vinales, Western Cuba, Cuba
Go to the bar in the cave
Cardenas, Central Cuba, Cuba
This is an authentic experience of small town Cuba...like Matanzas a bit, but on a smaller scale... take a ride through the city on a horse-driven carriage, mix and interact with the locals, check out the quaint cars parked here and there, the cigar-chomping men and soccer-playing kids amidst them, and walk around the city to know what Cuba is outside of Havana and the tourist cities...
Cienfuegos, Central Cuba, Cuba
There is plenty of greenery in and around Cienfuegos ... something reflected in its central square ... lined by majestic looking buildings in pastel shades of blue, pink, green and cream... Cienfuegos is not Havana in terms of things to do, but it offers a few things to explore around the central square... and some pleasant strolls around the city ... once you have eaten at the touristy but ok Palatino, where your coach is likely to take you if you are part of a traditional tour group for your sightseeing...
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
I went there alone as a girl and I can recommend this place for all the singel trvelers, very safe place, just dont take your bag in the night to the party!
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
go to have a Mojito in "la bodega del Medio" in Old Havana, and discover the lines Hemingway left written on the wall..
Trinidad, Central Cuba, Cuba
Travellers are always complaining about the food in Cuba. In fact, it's excellent. The best place to eat is at someone's home. You will be served excellent and plentiful food - curries, chicken, rice, black beans, fruit, fish... In Trinidad, there are a lot of casas particular (bbs) in people's homes. You can easily find a place by asking around, or checking the listed casas particular in the Lonely Planet guidebook. If a place you want is booked up, they will be able to recommend somewhere else and will often take you there. This is a pretty cheap alternative to a hotel. Be forewarned, however, that the beds will be uncomfortable. (All beds in Cuba - other than at the resorts - are pretty uncomfortable).
Mariel, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Mariel is a small town on the coast west of Havana. It was the point of departure for the many balseros who left Cuba for the US in 1980, following a severe economic downturn in Cuba. This is the town's biggest claim to fame. There are some interesting propagandist murals here, and goats.
Bacunayagua, Central Cuba, Cuba
At Bacunayagua, the bridge connecting the provinces of Havana and Matanzas is the highest in Cuba, and it is spectacularly located, straddling a canyon near the coast. To the north, you can see the beautiful blue waters and to southeast the bridge and tree-filled canyon. Bacunayagua is near Puerto Escondido, between Havana and Matanzas. There is a restaurant and shops near the bridge, with largely tacky souvenirs and the usual blender drinks. They sometimes have interesting books though.
Cubanacan, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
If you're in Havana, head out to the western part of town, beyond Miramar, to an area called Cubanacan where the National Art Schools are located. Built early on during the Cuban Revolution, these schools were a pedagogical experiment in creating an unconventional space geared towards learning in five areas: Plastic Arts, Music, Ballet, Drama, and Modern and Folkoric Dance. Set on a large parkland, the buildings are made of brick and concrete and feature striking catalan domes. The schools were unfortunately abandoned, but the Cuban government is rehabilitating them right now. UNESCO seems to have named the schools a World Heritage Site. Eventually, you will be able to get into the schools, but for now you can see them by circumnavigating the grounds.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Havana... where does one start and where does one end... perhaps at the Malecon, the sea-front of Cuba with its wind-swept air... but there is so much to see and do and experience in Havana... first go to the Partagas and the Romeo y Julieta cigar factories (both are open and closed on somewhat different days) and get yourself acquainted with this most Cuban of things... buy yourself a few (Romeo and Juliet, Cohiba and Monte Cristo are good), though its much better to buy it through a local Cuban... perhaps your host if you are staying with a family (highly recommended) as it is significantly cheaper ... then enjoy them over a Mojito at one of the many cocktail bars in Havana...perhaps that colourful one full of graffiti and postcards that Ernest Hemingway used to frequent... also visit Hemingway's room at the hotel Ambos Mundos where he stayed and wrote for quite a while ... the room is still maintained as it is with some of his belongings displayed... of course, the Museo Revolucion is unmissable... go there to get a full rundown on the revolution, Fidel Castro, Che, Batista, and the lot...it has interesting artefacts, letters, photographs and other paraphernalia...as you come out of it, there are the quaintest cars parked in front (not that there is any shortage of quaint vintage cars in Havana or Cuba)... but these are taxis, so take a ride...go to the impressive Presidential Palace too and to the Habana Libre for more of history...but don't miss the non-serious stuff too ... like feasting on ice-cream at Coppelia (an institution for local Cubans), dancing or learning salsa or tango at one of the local bars, and listening to Cuban bands playing at one of the many outside or inside restaurants and bars all over Havana ... while you engage in the serious business of downing Mojitos and chomping on your cigar or cigarillo ...

BRING A CAMERA OR YOU WILL KILL YOURSELF!Here is not only the holiest shrine in Cuba, but is also the location of a copper mine.  Cimmeron is the pilgrimage-statute that you MUST see by climbing to the top of the steep cliff. Here I met the great sculptor Alberto Lescay.
Florida, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
This is a stop on the travel bus route through provinces in Cuba.  The people here are the best in hospitality ONCE THEY KNOW YOU and the business you are here for.  I didn't know much Spanish and was still treated rightly.  Most of the citizens who befriended me spoke flawless English!TIPS:Know Spanish!Stay with friends.Carry toilet paper!DO NOT take pictures of soldiers, or those who you haven't asked permission.Buy no more than three boxes of cigars.

Cienfuegos, Central Cuba, Cuba
This is a major city and a stop on the travel bus route through provinces in Cuba.  Our plane made an emergency landing here to, during a storm.  The people here are not as friendly as in smaller towns.  I didn't know much Spanish but got along.  TIPS:Know Spanish!Stay with friends.Carry toilet paper!DO NOT take pictures of soldiers, or those who you haven't asked permission.Buy no more than three boxes of cigars.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
This is the end stop on the travel bus route through provinces in Cuba.  The people here are the best in hospitality ONCE THEY KNOW YOU and the business you are here for.  But they are definitely NOT as friendly here as in Santiago or as in smaller towns. Avoid ANY illegal activity or you'll stay longer than you wish.  See the Hemmingway House if you can and sneak some pictures or you will be charged about $200 for the privilege.  You MUST see the Plaza of the Revolucion and take the elevator to the top.  WALK the Malecon rather than drive.  The Deauville the the best hotel for value and view (if you can get a room facing Havana Harbor).  I made the mistake of aiming an expensive video camera towards the North during a rally.  When I realized that this was a jumping-off place for refugees to the U.S. I understood the big deal the police made of my shots.  The churches are beautiful and somewhat preserved since the religious ban lifted in 1993/94, so these are also great cultural places to photograph.  You must see the capital which is fashioned after the U.S. Congress building.  El Morro will encompass your entire day so bring WATER or you'll be charged an  exorbitant fee to refresh yourself.TIP:Dress down, look/act Cuban and you can get around on their public transportation for pennies.  Wear no socks and carry no watch.

Guantanamo, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Take the Land Rover express jeeps here, and ride with about 5 others but hold on for the bumps.  They are definitely NOT as friendly here as in Santiago or as in smaller towns. Avoid ANY illegal activity or you'll stay longer than you wish.  Dress down, look/act Cuban and you can get around on their public transportation for pennies.  Wear no socks and carry no watch.  It was not hard to figure I was a tourist, no matter what I did, and accordingly they were suspicious.  At some point I was told to stop shooting video while walking down the street.  Oh well.

Bayamo, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Très belle ville avec une architecture remarquable! À voir au sud de Cuba!
Baracoa, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Guantanamo, Eastern Cuba, Cuba
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
Very poor city but the people is very nice! There is very much thinks to visit!
Vinales, Western Cuba, Cuba
Varadero, Central Cuba, Cuba
Do not go! The most terrible place to visit in Cuba.
Havana, Havana & Surrounding Region, Cuba
