Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo-Kinshasa) is a massive and sprawling country in the heart of Africa. It is known in Joseph Conrad’s novel of the same name as Africa's, "Heart of Darkness."  European colonial atrocities were particularly vicious in the heart of Africa and set in motion a cycle of continued violence and instability that still plague the country. There are very few visitors, but the very fearless and adventurous may find much worth discovering in this largely unexplored (by tourists) and undeveloped country.

The capital of Kinshasa contrasts with much of the rest of the country. It is a sprawling and chaotic city with over 7 million inhabitants. It is vibrant but also tiring, with vendors, beggars galore and likely many bribes needed just to get around. Around Kinshasa are the Chutes de Lukia with its lakes and Bonobo orphanage, both popular with foreigners.

Travel up the Congo River into the jungle is possible but difficult and lengthy. The roads into the interior of the Congo are in extremely poor condition or non-existent, so traveling by boat is the only real option. The tribes in the interior do not see many foreigners, and it is advisable to be careful of which tribes are hostile. It is certainly a unique adventure though, to explore the jungle and river.

Kinshasa, Kinshasa Region, Democratic Republic of the Congo
The second biggest river in the world. From Kinshasa downstream, navigation is impossible due to rapids. On the other side, navigation is possible up to Kisangani, 2000km upstream. At some places, the river is more..

Spectacular falls on the Zongo river, just before it joins the Congo River. A short walk in jungle type nature allows the best view. A small restaurant is available.

Goma, Nord-Kivu Region, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Goma cheese....$5USD for some of the best Gouda i've ever tasted! Its not just a small slice like you have here in Canada, you get a full wheel of cheese. Also the veggies in Goma are cheap, you can get a plastic shopping bag full for $10! Excellent fruits and Veggies.

Be prepared to be kept waiting for a while at the border post... and find a spot in the shade as soon as you possibly can.

Kinshasa, Kinshasa Region, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Kinshasa and Brazzaville (capital of Congo-B) are the 2 closest capital cities in the world. To cross between them you'll need a visa - and make sure your visa for the country you're leaving is valid for multiple entries, otherwise you'll have to get a new one to come back, too. To get across, the cheap option is the ferry, but it stands until it's full enough to go, and many of the places have minimal shade, so be prepared for a long wait and wear sunscreen! Alternatively, you can ride across in a speedboat as the only passenger - as of late 2007 this cost about GB£ 120.

If you decide to cross from Kinshasa to Brazza, be aware that: 1) you'll need different currency in Brazza, which uses the CFA Franc (FCFA) valid in various West Central African countries. Kinshasa uses Congolese francs. 2) If you're planning to come back to Kin, you should check your entry visa for DRC - if it doesn't allow multiple entries, you'll have to pay for another one to get back because even though you're only going a couple of miles, and the 2 cities are almost one, you're leaving the country. 3) It's worth paying someone (trustworthy!) to go to the river port with your passport and get your Congo-B visa in advance, as it can be a long wait for one if you try to get it when you arrive at the port.

If interested to experience how live in the Outer Rims under Jabba the Hutt would be like, do go to Kasumbalesa ;-)

Don't be fooled by the fact that it's Africa: Goma can get pretty cold. I recommend hotel Ituri in front of lake Kivu. It's clean, decent and has a great swimming pool for laps.

Kinshasa, Kinshasa Region, Democratic Republic of the Congo
This city is not suitable for touristic purposes. The Zhongo Falls between Matadi and Kinshasa are spectacular. However they are very difficult to reach without 4 wheel drives.
