Denmark People & Culture

People in Denmark

The country has a population of about 5.5 million people.  The majority are Danes, a homogenous Gothic-Germanic people, having inhabited Denmark since prehistoric times.   A small German-speaking minority lives in southern Jutland; a mostly Inuit population inhabits Greenland; and the Faroe Islands have a Nordic population with its own language.  Other minorities are Turkish, Iranian and Somali.

10 things you must do in Copenhagen. 1.Tivoli. 2.Rosenborg (Crown Juwels + Kings Gardens) 3.Amalienborg (Queens residence) make sure you see the guard change at noon. 4. Kristiansborg (Parliment) 5. National Museum. 6. Langelinie (Walk from the "Oslo Boat" along the water by Amalien Haven and via Little Mermaid, small habour to the end of Langelinie, where you should end up with a Danish Sausage and a Ice cream) 7. Chanal Boat ride. 8. Ströget for your shopping or just people watching. 9. Rundetärn. 10. Rädhus (Majors office). To end every day or start every morning with a seat in Nyhavn, where you can really observe the people of Denmark and have a great cappuchino or a beer. Enjoy wonderful Copenhagen.

I stayed at Guldsmeden Axel Hotel. It has been very nice. Very comfortable, nice people, excellent breakfast. But I think every place in Copenhagen is wonderful. Danish people are the most civilized population in Europe. But they also know how to have fun! My best New Year's Eve! This town really makes me hope that a better world is possible!

Don't miss Christiania. Well that's it. Enough people said enough about that splendid city. Well, don't go in winter, I'd like to add.

My very personal image of roskilde. I was going out of Kopanhagen via this town. And it happened to be during the days of the famous festival. It was raining cats and dogs (as usual) and I was the only person trying to get out the town to hitchhike, while rest of the crowd were coming in. I've go lost three times and got completly wet. Among all this huge herd of people no local to ask the direction. Finally after three hours past I did find and went away. Survived! As i said it's very personal image

Denmark Religion

The state-supported Evangelical Lutheran Church accounts for about 95% of those persons claiming religious affiliation.    Roman Catholics and other Protestant denominations are also practiced.  Apart from Christianity, Islam is now the second-largest religion in Denmark (about 2%).

Arhus, Central Denmark, Denmark
Aarhus has a very friendly crowd and it's easy for foreighners to get in contact with the locals, especially in pubs and clubs. There's also a great chance you'll meet someone from your own country, as there's a lot of students with other cultural backgrounds than Danish.

Anholt, Central Denmark, Denmark
If you ever visit the island Anholt, I would strongly suggest you to bring some basic food... the prizes are very high due to the size og the island, and the small number of locals. Further more... bring entertainment... there is really not a lot to do, Books, games, music.. what ever you like to do. And remeber bathing cloth ;) thats roughly the only thing you can do...

Remember the breakfasts at the Hotel Astroria ? So huge and delicious . And you took with bits of jam and bread and eggs in doggy-bags . Remember my first shower in the Grand Hotel (baths were always my thing in earliest years) . I watched a war-movie on TV while you were sleeping there . Did you know ? Remember our visit to that strange gentleman outside in a smaller city who gave us tapes of Schlager-Music ? Or Björn Winblad and his posters ? The extraordinary production of The Nutcracker by the same man with all its colours and fabulous dancers ? Or The Barber of Seville with Ulrich Kold whom we met afterwards ? Or our mutual walks in town ? Or seeing Superman III and Wargames (with a Danish-speaking computer in the movie) ? Well , yes .The trips to Copenhagen were among the finest memories of my childhood . Funny experiences . Happy experiences . Good experinces . Breakfasts and very good Danish plays . Just my Dad and me having fun together . Copenhagen , we love you .

The only thing worth to visiting is the Italian restaurant near the railway station, they have excellent fish dishes. The nicest view over the city and the fjord is from the windmill on top of the hill. At night it's beautiful with special lights

Top tip - pop into the tourist office and pick up a 'walking map' of Copenhagen. Gives you a wonderful walking tour of Copenhagen and you can choose how long a route to take which brings you past all the important landmarks and out of the main high streets. Otherwise spend the day in Tivoli, one of the best theme parks in the world!

Humlebaek, Hovedstaden Region, Denmark
If you find yourself in Copenhagen don't neglect to make a day trip to the city of Humlebaek - about 1 hour away from Copenhagen - and the Louisiana Museum for Modern Art. It usually hosts some great exhibitions. You can buy a combined (and reduced) train and museum entrance ticket. The train journey is beautiful especially in Spring and Summer and the museum is located near the sea so the scenery is suberb.

Skagen er en hyggelig gammel by med masser af sjæl og speciel arkitektur. Det er også meget turistpræget og har en masse kultur og ferietilbud. Og så er det et spændende syn at se Grenen, hvor vandende mødes.

Copenhagen, Hovedstaden Region, Denmark
If you're up for a little adventure, be sure to visit Christiania, a small self-governed region of Denmark in the middle of Copenhagen. It's not for everyone, you should definitely keep your wits about you, and you must obey the citizens rules (absolutely no photography!). If you approach them with an open-mind and try to stay away from the touristy tendencies, the residents are very friendly and many of them probably have very interesting stories to tell. There is a market so you can buy a locally-made souvenir as well.
