Dominica, located midway along the eastern Caribbean archipelago, is known as the “Nature Isle of the Caribbean”, due to its unspoiled beauty and greenery. Tropical forest covers over two thirds of this sparsely populated island of 70,000. Dominica is one of the few islands left where you will find pre-Columbian Carib Indians, known as Kalinago. Visit their villages to get an inside glimpse off their lifestyle and culture. Located along the Caribbean ring of fire, Dominica is a relatively young island that is volcanic in origin with much geothermal activity, including hotsprings, and a unique Boiling Lake – the second largest in the world. Located just east of Roseau, the country’s capital, it makes for an interesting excursion. Other inland activities include plunges into refreshing pools collected at the base of numerous charming waterfalls, excursions through an extensive network of hiking paths, kayaking in the cool mountain lakes or rivertubing. The adventurous can even try canyoning. All around, virgin flora and lush scenery await. In the ocean, due to its sudden sharp drop off into water, Dominica is one of the best locations for whale watching, featuring over 22 species. It is the only country in the world where sperm whales reside all year long. Many spectacular diving and snorkeling sites also here for discovery. For relaxation, visit one of the many spas, or taste the local Creole cooking. This rural and uncrowded destination is perfect for those who want more than just white sandy beaches.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Dominica
We lived on this island for 16 months and can tell you quite a bit about what to see and do. It is absolutely beautiful but don't expect resort accommodations and tourist amenities. Best activities are hiking and snorkeling ... not a relax-on-the-beach-Caribbean-destination. Fort Young hotel is the best hotel on the island. Definitely visit Highride Nature Adventures for horseback riding or ATVing ... tell the Winstons we sent you. Incredible hikes/views include: Boiling Lake, Cabrits, Scott's Head, Emerald Pool, Trafalgar Falls, Indian River, Calibishie and Middleham Falls. Also a great island for whale watching, and quite possibly the most beautiful sunsets in the world. I lived here because my husband was attending Ross University. If you are a family thinking about going to Ross, be sure to do it together. It is a life-changing experience. Get hooked up with Ross Christian Fellowship and the Spouse support group. All of our Dominica experiences are chronicled on our Web site: www.kellyandian.com.

There are a lot of drivers who will be more than willing to drive you around "the sights".. spend the extra cash and get a private car not a huge van with tons of people. Ask what kinds of things they will take you to.. find one that will go "off the beaten track" to more local spots, and one that will let you get out and walk around..or swim :) Picking a good driver makes all the difference.. a tour of an island may sound touristy but its a good start..you see a lot and you can figure out what kinds of things/areas you want to focus in on. If you get a boring, stuffy driver or worse an extremely political driver who wants to talk American politics while you're trying to learn about a culture..it can really have a negative impact on the experience.
I'll recommend Dale.. like Chip n Dale as he will tell you. He MADE my visit... you HAVE to see one of their waterfalls and go swimming..

My favorite Caribbean island, tropical rainforest's and nice people, not as pushy as on other more touristic islands.

When there be sure to visit  Trafalgar Waterfalls, some half hour drive from the city, a tropical paradise, take a walk trough the rain forest for 20min and you get to the small natural pools with  hot water, go little bit further and you'll end up close to the waterfall. My favorite spot is small lake under the waterfall, where, if you stand in the middle of it, water mist creates a rainbow all  around you....
A touch of heaven :)
