Dominica's capital Roseau has about 15,000 people and is filled with wood and stone buildings that range from picturesque to ramshackle.

Although Roseau is a small town, the days can be quite energetic, with reggae music filling the air and people going about their daily business.  Nighttime is a different story as Roseau becomes quiet and nightlife is very limited.

Roseau makes a good base to explore Dominica's wilderness from, including Morne Trois Pitons National Park (which contains Boiling Lake, the world's second largest actively boiling lake among other wilderness highlights).

Travel Tips from people who've been to Roseau
My favorite Caribbean island, tropical rainforest's and nice people, not as pushy as on other more touristic islands.

When there be sure to visit  Trafalgar Waterfalls, some half hour drive from the city, a tropical paradise, take a walk trough the rain forest for 20min and you get to the small natural pools with  hot water, go little bit further and you'll end up close to the waterfall. My favorite spot is small lake under the waterfall, where, if you stand in the middle of it, water mist creates a rainbow all  around you....
A touch of heaven :)

Avoid Roseau during cruises season. Go through the market to discover the local products, wander throughout the streets to admire the typical caribean houses, beautiful colors.
Take a walk up to the Botanic garden to see the baobab that fell on a school bus and relived.
Eat on the balcony of one of the little restaurant in the center while enjoying the view on the houses and the city life. I loved all this !

Roseau is the capital of Dominica (pronounced Dom-o-nee-ka), a small island in the eastern Caribbean.  To preserve the nature and lifestyle of the island, you will not find one franchise on the entire island, only small family-owned shops, stores and hotels.  Sorry KFC fans, you'll have to get your original recipe elsewhere.
